Gerard Butler Gets Deep
In an interview with The Guardian UK, he shows a side of him some may be surprised about considering his rough and rugged exterior.
His opinion on the Paparazzi:
“God damn, I hate those people,”
He admits that half his time is spent:
“trying to maintain a good attitude” by way of “meditation, conversation and spending 10 minutes a day with nature”.
Damn, I wish my name were Nature. I would take 10 minutes a day. I’m not greedy.
Shockingly gratuitous violence leaves him feeling:
“hollow inside”. “It’s like when you’re having a steak and you suddenly feel nauseous,” he says. “You think, ‘This is something dead, and I’m putting it inside me.’”
Make love, not war. Check
He’s pleased with his part in RockNRolla feeling it allows him to show off his range:
“One Two is more multi-faceted than the parts I’ve played before,” he says. “He can be tough, but he can also be clumsy, vain, self-conscious and silly.”
On being just one of the boys:
“In Scotland I’m just like a lot of other guys,” he says, “but in America I’m seen as a very strong, masculine guy.”
Can you imagine MORE like him in Scotland? Maybe it’s time to consider a move?
On the difference between men in Scotland and men in L.A.
“In Glasgow, you probably grow up faster. You have to deal with more shit, more realism. In LA, it’s a superficial, perfect world. In Glasgow, you’re expected to be a man – but it doesn’t make you the perfect man. It makes you a man who’s not able to talk about his feelings.”
Asked if he was lonely:
“I definitely have my moments. It’s a Scottish thing, the Celtic fog. I am prone to getting inside my head too much. I feel it quite heavily from time to time. In this job, there’s more chance for that. Not all the time, just 95%. It’s like: please don’t leave me alone.”
His final thoughts:
“I grew up in a very working-class part of Glasgow,” he adds. “Then I worked for a very well-to-do law firm in Edinburgh. Then I was an actor in London. Now I’m between New York and LA. I’ve lived in so many places it’s sometimes confusing as to who I am”.
