Had it not been for her arrest in June, Tatum O’Neal is convinced she would still be using cocaine and her life spiralling downhill.

In an exclusive Oprah interview, to be aired September 12, the actress says:

“I got close to relapsing. It was close enough. Too close for comfort. “I was almost at my year and I chose not to start over.”

She admits that she came “within minutes of relapsing after almost a year of sober living” and can’t thank the arresting police officers enough for inadvertently stopping her.

She pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and contintues to undergo counselling at a drug-treatment program and had to pay a small fine. The charges will be dropped if she continues to impress the authorities.

Don’t get me wrong, if that story is in fact true, I’m really happy for her.  And you can call me cynical, but I found it hard to believe that at the one moment in time, at that precise moment a police “happened” to be there to arrest her.  In other words, was she really straight and sober when she was arrested?  Just asking…..
