E! Online is reporting that Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy got engaged just before the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve according to a friend.

Wow…I knew they were a couple and seemed to be really smitten with each other, but who knew they were that serious.  Maks impresses me as a bit of a playboy, no?  I think Karina will keep him in his place, won’t she?

There has been no comment from either camp.

It was only 6 months ago that Karina and Mario Lopez ended their 2 year relationship.

Season nine of Dancing With the Stars kicks off on March 9!!
