Penelope Cruz recently spoke with Parade and talked about how much being in ‘Nine’ meant to her:
“When I was a kid I trained as a dancer for 14 years. I used to dance every day for hours and it gave me a lot of happiness. I always wanted to do a musical. But the discipline of it was too demanding and I had what I guess you call a nervous breakdown. That’s when I decided to try acting. So it was great to get another chance to dance five hours a day on Nine. There was also the challenge of having to sing and having to prepare for that and feeling completely vulnerable. I think we all were scared, everyone in the cast was, and we could all understand how the other one was feeling.”
She reveals her secret acting weapon is her iPod:
“It helps me very much to have my iPod. It’s always with me on the set. Music is very important to me because it goes directly to your heart. I always have, like, 20 songs that I pick for the character, and that’s all I listen to while I’m making the movie. I try to stay in the zone and not let my attention be distracted. But if you do that for a whole 12 hours that you are shooting, you can really get blocked. So it’s a tricky thing.”
How did we all survive without iPods in our lives before?
She tries to remain humble:
“It’s important not to be too confident as an actor. I don’t want to get to the set and feel like I know what I’m doing and be very secure. That would really scare me. But the Oscar was a beautiful thing. After I won, I realised how exhausted I was from everything building up to that moment,”
She talked about the experience of winning her Oscar and what she did before the ceremony:
“I was a zombie for the whole rest of the night. I still can’t remember anything from the moment I was onstage giving my speech. ”I ate an In-N-Out burger and then I went to the red carpet. I do it, like, once a week or once every two weeks. It’s my little treat. I love the Double-Double with fries.”
We don’t have In-N-Out Burgers in Canada, but I checked online and the Double Double has 670 calories with 41 grams of fat. The fries? 400 calories with 18 grams of fat. Victoria Beckham just fainted.
She treats her Oscar real good:
“I am still excited when I look at my Oscar. It’s travelled a lot with me around the world. I even took him to the beach one day. I gave Oscar his own towel. My family was starting to get a little worried.”
