No doubt you heard the news by now that Amy Winehouse 27, has been found dead in her North London flat this afternoon. While we all had our moments of poking fun at her in various states of intoxication and drug highs (yours truly included) one always hopes that a person as talented and brilliant as Amy Winehouse would seek help before this. What an absolute tragedy that she wasn’t able to fight whatever demons led her down such a self-destructive path.
She was found at approximately 3:54 p.m. (London time of course) and the London Ambulance Service could not revive the singer.
She rose to fame with her Back to Black album back in 2006 that contained her very famous (and very tragic) ‘Rehab’ song. Since that time she has had several failed attempts at rehab for both drugs and alcohol with the last time being in May in which it was alleged she grabbed a bottle of vodka on her way to the clinic.
Her record label released the following statement:
‘We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer.
‘Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.’
The police also released a statement:
‘Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.
‘On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.’
Amy Winehouse’s father had been on a plane to New York for a jazz festival he will take part in TMZ is reporting he is on his way back home to London.
Back in 2008 her mother accepted the fact that her daughter’s passing may very well come before her own:
‘I’ve known for a long time that my daughter has problems. But seeing it on screen rammed it home. I realise my daughter could be dead within the year. We’re watching her kill herself, slowly.
‘I’ve already come to terms with her dead. I’ve steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road.
‘I look at Heath Ledger and Britney. She’s on their path. It’s like watching a car crash – this person throwing all these gifts away.’
Also in 2008 Amy was nominated for 6 Grammy’s and walked away with 5 honors for: Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best New Artist (for her ‘Rehab’ song from the Back to Black album) . This got her into the Guinness World Records in 2009 for earning the most Grammy awards by a British Female Act.
Our sincerest condolences to her family and friends at this tragic and much-too-soon loss of Amy Winehouse.
These are photos of the scene going on at her London apartment with police and fans. This death is in ways as shocking as Michael Jackson’s except in this case although we are shocked, I don’t think anyone is surprised. Her own mother realized this was a distinct possibility.
So very sad. RIP Amy Winehouse.
