New International Trailer for The Adventures of Tintin!

New International Trailer for The Adventures of Tintin!

Last week we showed you the first image from the film, this week we’re bringing you a look at the international trailer for Steven Spielberg’s very first animated film, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn! (Another film with a long title, this one is not a sequel, but my guess is they’re hoping for one.)

The plot, which is very evident from the trailer, and I do hope isn’t revealing too much, concerns a young man called Tintin, a reporter, who discovers the directions to a sunken ship and embarks on a hunt for missing treasure.

Tintin features the voices of Jamie Bell as Tin Tin, Simon Pegg as Inspector Thompson, Nick Frost as Inspector Thomson, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Daniel Craig as Red Rackham, the villain of the piece. This role was reportedly expanded from the comic books, which I must say I am unfamiliar with. The character originated in Belgium and there was a short-lived British animated series in the early 90′s. Despite my limited familiarity, I am completely open to this and look forward to being wowed yet again by Spielberg.

The film was shot using the same motion capture technology used in The Polar Express, but has progressed since then so that the result looks decidedly less creepy.  Jamie Bell’s and Daniel Craig’s voices were the only ones I recognized. Andy Serkis, not known for his voice anyway, was probably brought on board because of his expertise in motion capture filming – I’m kidding! Although he’s probably far more at ease in the “mo-cap” suit than the other actors were. Craig talked about wearing the embarrassing outifit in the August issue of Esquire magazine.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn opens in 3D in the UK on October 26th and in the US on December 23rd.

First Posters for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows!

First Posters for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows!

Thanks to Warner Brothers, two posters have been released for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the long awaited sequel to 2009′s Sherlock Holmes (Is it me or does every movie these days have a super long title with a colon in it? Oh yeah, maybe because every movie out these days is a bloody SEQUEL!) Seriously though, who isn’t looking forward to more Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law and their steampunk version of Sherlock Holmes and the intrepid Dr. Watson?

This time out they’ll be joined by the original Lisbeth Salander from the Swedish Millenium Trilogy, Noomi Rapace as a character called “Sim” along with Stephen Fry as Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft Holmes and Jared Harris as Sherlock’s arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty, a role that Brad Pitt, Daniel Day-Lewis, Javier Bardem, Gary Oldman and Sean Penn were reportedly all considered for.  Rachel McAdams makes an appearance as Irene Adler (although I’ll bet ya a dollar it’s only a cameo) Other returning players include Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson and Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan.

Not much is known about the plot other than “Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.” Well could they be any more vague and cryptic? That’s like saying that Pinky and the Brain have decided that tonight they will plot to take over the world.

In any case, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens in the UK, the US and Canada on 16 December 2011. Woot! Can’t wait!

Michael Fassbender Joins the Cast of At Swim-Two-Birds!

Michael Fassbender Joins the Cast of At Swim-Two-Birds!

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has added another Irish actor, Michael Fassbender, to the cast of his directorial debut, At Swim-Two-Birds. The film has been in development for seven years, since Gleeson bought the rights to Flann O’Brien’s 1938 novel of the same name.

Fassbender joins other Irish actors, Gabriel Byrne, Cillian Murphy and Collin Farrell, who’ve all been attached for two years while the project found financing, as well as Gleeson’s son, actor Domhnall, who appeared as Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pts 1 and 2 (with his father). Jonathan Rhys Meyers had been attached as well but is no longer listed. No reason was given but it could be tied to the actor’s recent personal problems.

The novel, one of Time Magazine’s “Top 100 Novels of All Time”, revolves around a university student (in the film he’s been changed to a playwright) whose fictional characters begin to rebel against their creator and follows him as he writes a novel behind closed doors that seemingly intertwines with characters in his own life.  The book has been described as “a collision between Ireland’s literary, heroic past and its grimy, mundane present.”

Financing is still being put together, which is never an easy proposition for an independent film in any economic climate.  Given his newly acquired star status, hopefully Fassbender’s name will help. (It worked for Ralph Fiennes when he added Gerard Butler to his directorial debut, Coriolanus.) No word yet on what roles any actors will be playing, but the elder Gleeson has said that, in addition to directing, he will play the writer’s uncle.

Since production hasn’t begun, there are no release dates yet, but At Swim-Two-Birds  is tentatively scheduled for a 2013 opening.

New Poster for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil!

New Poster for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil!

Horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs Evil  has been released ahead of its appearance at this month’s San Diego Comic Con and its official US release. Starring Alan Tudyk (Transformers: Dark of the MoonA Knight’s Tale3:10 to YumaSerenity) and Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, “Reaper”, “Invasion”), this is a film that has been in the can for more than a year. What’s interesting about the fact that it’s finally getting a release is the aforementioned Comic Con appearance. The panel for this film has been scheduled for the coveted and MASSIVE Hall H, the same place the Twilight: Breaking Dawn panel will be held and where the major studios like 20th CenturyFox previewed Independence DayAvatar,and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (and this year will present first-looks at some of its most-anticipated films of 2011 and 12.) meanwhile panels for other more high-profile films like Rise of the Planet of the ApesThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be relegated to much smaller venues. Curiouser and curiouser.

Apparently Tucker and Dale vs Evil played quite a few festivals in 2010 (what a shame, it won’t be eligible for this year’s Oscars), including Sundance, winning the Midnight Audience Award at SXSW, the Jury Prize for First Feature at Fantasia, the Best Director Award at Fantaspoa, and the Best Motion Picture Award at Sitges.

Here’s the official synopsis:

TUCKER & DALE VS EVIL is a hilariously gory, good-spirited horror comedy, doing for killer rednecks what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies. Tucker and Dale are two best friends on vacation at their dilapidated mountain house, who are mistaken for murderous backwoods hillbillies by a group of obnoxious, preppy college kids. When one of the students gets separated from her friends, the boys try to lend a hand, but as the misunderstanding grows, so does the body count.”

Check out the trailer. It looks to me like there’s more gore than ‘horror’, but it does look like it could be funny, provided the best bits aren’t on display here.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil will be creeping into a theater near you on 30 September 2011.

Gucci Mane 7th Annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors

Gucci Mane was released from an Atlanta jail on Friday morning.  He’d been in for 2 1/2 months  after he was arrested in January and charged with misdemeanor battery after he shoved a woman out of his moving vehicle, and for violating his current probation.

He Tweeted to his fans:

“I’m back bitch gucci back bitch did u miss me or miss my raps bitch.”

He is promising this time around to be a good boy! We shall see.

“I give my word,” he told Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9 FM. “It’s getting too much for me. I can’t keep going to jail. I slipped up this time, but no more slip ups.”
