Several films got new posters over the long holiday weekend. One was for a film, Universal’s Dream House, that we’ve been hearing a lot about lately, but not because of the film itself, but rather because it stars two of the most talked about newlyweds of recent months, (no I don’t mean Wills and Kate,) Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz.
The poster for Dream House, a thriller about a family who move in to the home of their dreams (get it? Dream House?) only to find out that several grisly murders were committed there, is spectacularly bad. Maybe it’s the look on Craig’s face, but nothing about the poster suggests that this film is essentially a murder mystery and is supposed to be a taut thriller.
The film sports an exceptional cast. In addition to Craig and Weisz (how come no one has come up with a snappy yet irritating new moniker for this couple? RaDan? Creisz? Hmm…maybe that’s why) it also stars Naomi Watts, Martin Csokas (Kingdom of Heaven, Timeline, Asylum*swoon*) and Elias Koteas (he’s either the bad guy or a cop – no middle ground with this guy.) The director is Jim Sheridan, who is usually associated with much more ‘high-brow’ stuff like My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and In America. Sheridan and the cast leadme to give this one a chance, but what about the casual movie goer? Will this poster lure anyone into the theater?
Captain America: The First Avenger also got a brand spanking new international poster, thanks to ComingSoon.com.
I like it. It’s bold and colorful and gives a clear indication of what the film is about, and that you’ll probably have a good time at the theater. Not the first for this film. There have been quite a few already released. My favorite is this one, that mirrors closely a vintage comic book cover image. (Plus there’s that whole punching Hitler angle.)
The last new poster is for a film I had, frankly, forgotten about since Variety reported on the start of production back in January. I was intrigued then for a number of reasons, including the cast, which includes James Franco, Benicio Del Toro and Michael Shannon, and is listed front and center on the poster, the director Ariel Vromen (Danika, Rx and a little short by the name of Jewel of the Sahara. Look it up. I told you all roads lead to G) not to mention the subject matter.
The Iceman is based on the book of the same name, the true story of cold blooded killer Richard Kuklinksi, played by Michael Shannon, who was a contract assassin for the mob while also a devoted family man. The title comes from Kuklinski’s nickname. He reportedly froze his victims in order to throw off the authorities trying to discern time of death.
Other cast includes Elias Koteas (remember what I told you) and Vromen regular Ori Pfeffer. The Iceman is currently in production and no release dates have been set. The fact that Nu Image and Millenium Films have released a poster is a very good sign.
