“No such thing as 470 proof alcohol!”

The first trailer has at long last dropped for Bruce Robinson’s The Rum Diary, based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson and starring Johnny Depp. This is the second time Depp has made a movie based on a work by Thompson. He made Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, released in 1998 and costarring Benicio Del Toro. Del Toro was at one point attached to direct The Rum Diary, which has been in development since 2001 with production to have begun in 2004. (It didn’t.)

Paul Kemp (Depp) is a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life. A divorced alcoholic, he heads to the Caribbean to write for a  run-down newspaper. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself in the middle of a rebellion and amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction.

Written by the director, Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I, How to Get Ahead in Advertising), this looks and sounds like an insane amount of fun. The cast is both wacky and talented, including Giovanni Ribisi (who does not work enough), Richard Jenkins (and his wig), Aaron Eckhardt, Michael Rispoli, Bill Smitrovich and in a role for which both Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley were considered, Amber Heard. (Zombieland, Drive Angry, the upcoming “The Playboy Club”- In the pic below, I thought it was Elizabeth Banks at first, but it’s the makeup.) “I thought you were a mermaid” “I’m from Connecticut.” Love it!

The bar is open for The Rum Diary on October 28 in the US and 4 November in the UK.

Some of the Dancing With The Stars’ professionals (and celebrities of DWTS’ past) hit Malibu beach for some fun in the sun together while Maksim Chmerkovskiy opted for some quality alone time.

Derek Hough, Tony Dovolani, Lacey Schwimmer, Anna Trebunskaya, Cheryl Burke, Jennifer Grey, Gilles Marini and Melissa Rycroft look to be having a blast at Malibu beach yesterday.

Soon enough we’ll be seeing these fabulous people back in their dancing shoes when Season 13 of Dancing With The Stars kicks off on September 19. On Monday (during Bachelor Pad) we will learn which celebrities are confirmed for the show.

Bones’ Star Emily Deschanel 34, is now national spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals. Besides being beautiful and talented she has a love of animals and that’s a win-win in our books.

The Walk For Farm Animals takes place in the Fall in 35 cities in both the U.S. and Canada. In the video clip below she says:

“Farm animals are just as interesting and intelligent as the dogs and cats who we know a bit better,” says Deschanel. “Yet they are treated by the meat industry as though they are inanimate objects with no feelings or personalities.”

“When you walk, you give hope to billions of animals who are suffering right now on factory farms,” “Please join me in supporting this important effort by registering to participate in aWalk for Farm Animals near you at WalkForFarmAnimals.org.”  

Whether you eat meat or not, if you’ve seen any inside coverage (and by that I mean taken without the knowledge of the farm) you know that the animals are treated in an unnecessarily cruel manner. It’s actually quite barbaric.

We have some new stills from David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. When I say “revealing” I mean they are a little more telling about what we can expect in terms of mood and style. You thought I was going to show you skin, didn’t you? You thought I was going to show you naked Daniel Craig didn’t you? (We’ve already seen -mostly- naked Rooney Mara.) Would that it were so. No one would like that more than I.  I have to say, I’m looking forward to this more than I thought I would. I really am curious what Fincher has done with the incredible cast, not to mention the internationally known source material. Okay I’m a little curious about Trent Reznor’s score too, especially after hearing the cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” in the trailer. I hope that’s actually in the film because if that’s the tone they want to set, it’s right and I’m all for it. I hate it when they pull a bait and switch.
