Clooney’s The Descendants Gets a Poster, New Pics

Clooney's The Descendents Gets a Poster, New Pics

It was all the way back in June that we showed you the first trailer for George Clooney’s other ticket to the big festival this fall (it will play the Toronto International Film Festival next month), The Descendents.

George plays Matt King, a father on the verge of a nervous breakdown, trying to reconnect with his two teen-aged daughters after his wife has an accident and lingers on life-support. The title refers to the land that been handed down to his family from Hawaiian royalty. In addition to his other problems, King must decide whether or not to sell his family’s legacy.

Directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways), I think this looks similar to The Boys Are Back, with Clive Owen (only with girls), but it also looks like it has elements of Payne’s earlier films, particularly About Schmidt, a brilliant ‘dramedy’ in which Jack Nicholson had to adjust to life as a widower and attempt to reconnect with his family.

TIFF press release:  “The Descendants” is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney), an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

The supporting cast of The Descendants includes Judy Greer, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Rob Huebel, Matthew Lillard, Michael Ontkean and Robert Forster and is scheduled for a December 16, 2011 release.  George Clooney…nuff said.

New Poster and Pics for Trespass!

New Poster and Pics for Trespass!

A new look at another TIFF entry, Joel Schumacher’s Trespass, offers up a new poster and some glossy new stills featuring cast members Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman and Cam Gigandet. (The poster is clearly an ‘artist’s’ rendering of one of the pics below. It may be the worst poster ever.)

The Toronto International Film Fest,  generally the harbinger of quality and often awards-worthy films and the name Joel Schumacher don’t usually go together. The words glossy and slick go with Schumacher. From St. Elmo’s Fire to Lost Boys to Flatliners all the way up through The Phantom of the Opera, there have been a few gems (A Time to Kill is still eminently watchable, Tigerland introduced the world to Colin Farrell, I even liked Veronica Guerin), but there’s also been an awful lot of schlock.

The thing is, Schumacher has an incredible knack for getting A-List talent to sign up for his projects. Nicole Kidman was also in the first of his two Batmans, Batman Forever, there’s also been Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts (twice), Kevin Spacey, Michael Douglas, Matthew McConaughey, Susan Sarandon, Ciaran Hinds (twice), Colin Farrell (twice), Nicolas Cage (twice).

I pretty much wrote him off after he tried to kill Michael Fassbender’s career with the unwatchable Blood Creek. I heard he tried to do the same thing to Zac Effron with Twelve. So it’s a mystery what he’s doing at TIFF this year. I must admit, however, that I tend to trust their judgment.

Here’s the plot, stop me if you’d heard this before: As they’re held for ransom in their own home, a husband and wife’s predicament grows more dire amid the discovery of betrayal and deception.

We’ll see. Cage supposedly has money problems, but I don’t think Kidman needs the work. There must be something to this, right?

Trespass will open in theaters and premiere on VOD on October 14, 2011.

Bradley Cooper on the Place Beyond the Pines Set!

Bradley Cooper on the Place Beyond the Pines Set!

You’ve seen the Baby Goose (Ryan Gosling) feeding a baby and riding a motorcycle all the while oddly coiffed with bleached blonde hair and covered in tatts. Now get a first look at his co-star Bradley Cooper on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines. I’d be hard pressed to say whose hair was more bizarre. Is this movie set in the ’80′s?

In any case, here’s Bradley, who plays Avery Cross, a policeman turned politician, on a “collision course” with Ryan Gosling’s Luke, a professional motorcycle stunt rider who turns to bank robbery in order to provide for his wife and newborn son.

The Place Beyond the Pines, currently filming in upstate New York is writer/director Derek Cianfrance’s followup effort to last year’s indie darling, Blue Valentine, also starring his pal Gosling.  The cast of The Place Beyond the Pines include Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ray Liotta and Ben Mendelson and is slated for a release sometime in 2013. (2013? For an independent film with no special effects? Are they still raising money to finish the thing?)

By the way, you’ll notice one of these things is not like the other. I had to. I just did.

Close-up Look at Tom Hardy as Bane! VIDEO & PHOTOS

Close-up Look at Tom Hardy as Bane! VIDEO & PHOTOS

From Comic Book Movie come these three shots of Tom Hardy as Bane taken last week during filming of a scene for The Dark Knight Rises at Heinz Field. The crowd scene, featuring hundreds of locals as extras, also featured some members of the Pittsburgh Steelers doubling for the Gotham Rogues. The pics don’t show much that we haven’t seen before, but they are close-up. There are also a few pics of Mr. Hardy “out” of costume.

A little background on the super-villain: Bane is born and raised in prison and is forced to serve the life sentence meant for his father, then subjected to 10 years in solitary confinement while a scientific research team uses him to test a super-steroid called Venom. He eventually fakes his own death to escape the prison, and makes his way to Gotham City.

Bane is intelligent but also deeply disturbed, as one might imagine from such an upbringing. When Bane learns of the legendary Batman, he decides that he needs to prove his superiority by defeating the Dark Knight.  In the comic books, one encounter with Batman results in a blow from Bane that breaks Batman’s back, thus earning him the reputation as “The Man Who Broke The Bat.”

It’s still not clear how closely Christopher Nolan’s Bane will stick to the comic books. Unlike previous portrayals of the character the mask Tom Hardy’s Bane wears is less like that of a professional wrestler and more like a machine of some sort. The theory most often found on the web is that the mask will serve to inject the Venom so that he can maintain his super strength.

The clip below is a fan shot video of the scene being filmed featuring the voice of Tom Hardy as Bane. I absolutely love cadence and rhythm he’s using and can’t wait to hear it in the movie!
