Seven Cool Character Posters for Drive!

Seven Cool Character Posters for Drive!

Latino Review found these seven very cool, glossy character posters for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. This film has been getting an insane amount of buzz for the three plus months since Refn himself won the Best Directing prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Kudos have been surround Hossein Amini’s script, star Ryan Gosling’s performance as well as the movie as a whole. It also played London’s Big Screen festival a couple of weeks ago to raves. Personally I can’t wait.

Every major character in the film gets a poster of his or her own, including Gosling’s Driver, Carey Mulligan’s sweet Irene, Bryan Cranston’s Shannon, Ron Perlman’s ambitious Nino, Christina Hendricks’ Blanche, Oscar Isaacs’ Standard and Albert Brooks nefarious Bernie Rose. How cool is that?

Back in July we posted the Red Band Trailer for the movie. Have a look and let us know what you  think.

Refn next takes Drive to TIFF before it opens in the US on September 16 and 23 September in the UK.

A Cracking New International Trailer for Tinker,Tailor, Soldier, Spy!

A Cracking New International Trailer for Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy!

Believe it or not, it’s been about three weeks since the last trailer was released for Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I don’t know about you, but I’ve just been waiting for more. This has got to be one of the most hotly anticipated films in recent memory. It’s not Lord of the Rings or another new Star Wars installment to be sure, but in addition to the hipster film geeks, fans of British cinema (since just about every working Brit actor is in the thing) and of old school spy thrillers are excited as well. I think this one is going to cross generational lines and be a massive all around hit.

This trailer doesn’t contain a lot we haven’t seen in other trailers. Mostly the material has either been expanded, contracted or rearranged. We do, however, get a better look at John Hurt’s character known simply as “Control”. Tom Hardy’s character, Ricki Tarr, appears to be central to the plot unless they’re just putting a lot of him in the trailers to drive me mad. I should probably read the book.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy  has been described as a both “breathtakingly ordinary” and the “anti-James Bond” for its more realistic approach to the spy biz. I can’t wait to see what Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) has done with it in its entirety. The official synopsis: In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6′s echelons. Gary Oldman stars as Smiley and in addition to Hurt and Hardy, the sublime cast includes Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch (who gets his own brand spanking new character poster below), Simon McBurney and Stephen Graham among others.

Find the mole starting on 16 September in the UK (although Venice gets first crack) and then on November 18 in the US.

Jay-Z and Kanye West To Give Surprise Performance Tonight at MTV VMAs

Jay-Z and Kanye West To Give Surprise Performance Tonight at MTV VMAs

Tonight’s MTV VMAs are going to have some incredible performances and apparently that includes a surprise performance by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Apparently the news is so hush-hush that people involved with production of the show aren’t even sure when the two are taking the stage.

And if we are REALLY lucky, Beyonce will join them as she is featured on Lift Off from their Watch The Throne collaboration according to E!s Marc Malkin. Now that would be an unforgettable performance, wouldn’t it?

Other performances tonight include Adele, Lady GaGa, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and a tribute to Britney Spears. Tony Bennett will pay a special tribute to the late Amy Winehouse.

The show airs tonight at 9/8c.

This is Cool! New Clip from Bunraku!

This is Cool! New Clip from Bunraku!

For a couple of months now, I’ve been telling you about this odd little neo-noirish mystery/martial arts mashup called Bunraku from director Guy Moshe (2006′s well regarded indie, Holly).

The synopsis is “In a world with no guns, a mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett), a young samurai (Gackt) and a bartender, (Woody Harrelson) plot revenge against a ruthless leader (Ron Perlman) and his army of thugs, headed by nine diverse and deadly assassins. This visually stunning film is filled with uniquely choreographed action sequences of a new style that melds east with west and old school with new.”

Sounds like fun, yes? And once again, I must mention my reason for discovering this in the first place, Kevin McKidd. Dr. Hunt (although I first discovered him as Pvt. Cooper in Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers) plays Killer #2, in a purple zoot suit and some interesting makeup no less.

In the clip below our “hero” Josh Hartnett gets into a brawl of sorts with the samurai played by Japanese pop star Gackt, much to Woody Harrelson’s amusement. Harrelson’s bartender tells the to “take it outside” as bartenders do when a fight is about to break out. The thing with this movie is, that it’s so highly stylized, and most of it takes place in front of green screens, that outside looks like inside. Kind of Sin City-esque. The look and the fight itself are very cool.:

This just looks too wacky to not be a lot of fun. Bunraku (which played TIFF in 2010, along with quite a few more festivals), will get a theatrical release in the US on September 30 before going to dvd and blu-ray in the UK on 3 October.
