Wow, you can tell October is right around the corner. Things are starting to get serious in terms of the end-of-the-year awards season contenders. We're starting to get pics and posters and clips right and left. To that end, we have a new poster for Steven Spielberg's Oscar bait, War Horse. If I saw a film on the basis of a poster alone, I'd probably see War Horse. (I don't judge a film by its poster but I'll be seeing War Horse because it's directed by Spielberg with a score by John Williams and cinematography by Janusz Kaminski. The screenplay was cowritten by Richard Curtis (Love, Actually, Bridget Jones' Diary, Notting Hill) and Lee Hall (Oscar nominated for Billy Elliott).
War Horse is based on a hit play, which in turn was based on a bestselling novel. It's a simple premise: Albert, an English farm boy's beloved horse (Joey) is shipped off to help fight World War I; the boy enlists soon after, despite being underage and hopes to reunite with his horse somewhere on the Western front. It's been a while but we showed you the well made trailer and frankly this looks like it will tug at the heart strings- as well as the tearducts- in typical Spielbergian fashion. That's the thing with Spielberg; you generally know what you're going to get and that's a good story well told.
War Horse stars Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Toby Kebbell, Eddie Marsan, Peter Mullen, David Kross and Jeremy Irvine as Albert. It opens December 28 in the US and 13 January in the UK.
