Chilling New US Trailer for We Need to Talk About Kevin!

Chilling New US Trailer for We Need to Talk About Kevin!

The new trailer for Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, aimed at the US market, goes further than anything we’ve yet seen. It also makes sure we know that Tilda Swinton gives an amazing performance, then again, what else is new. She always does. She and John C. Reilly star as the parents of a teenage old boy (Ezra Miller) who goes on a high-school killing spree and must try to deal with their grief and feelings of responsibility for their child's actions.

Official synopsis: Eva (Swinton) puts her ambitions and career aside to give birth to Kevin. The relationship between mother and son is difficult from the very first years. When Kevin is 15 , he does something irrational and unforgivable in the eyes of the entire community. Eva grapples with her own feelings of grief and responsibility. Did she ever love her son? And how much of what Kevin did was her fault?

I’ve loved every trailer I’ve seen for this. Usually the music used gives us cues as to what the mood and tone are of what we're about to see. If that were true here, coupled with the expression on Swinton's face for the first half of it, I'd think this was a comedy of sorts. The mood and tone shift about half-way through and we know we're dealing with something much darker, but it doesn't tell you how to feel about it.

We Need to Talk About Kevin  wowed at Cannes and at TIFF and every festival you can think of. It won the BFI London Film Festival’s equivalent of Best Picture last week and has already opened in the UK. It gets a limited (grrrrrr) US release on December 2.

Dancing With The Stars Season 13 Week 7 Recap 10/31/11

Dancing With The Stars Season 13 Week 7 Recap October 31, 2011

It's Halloween and also week 7 of season 13 of Dancing With The Stars. We'll be bringing you the couples, their dances some commentary and their scores. It's all Halloween and it's all spooky!  Keep refreshing in real time because we are here with you. Tonight is a two-dance number with the second dance being group dances.

David Arquette and Kym Johnson Cha cha cha –  They danced to Abracadabra.Poor David Arquette he's so nervous and he's so sweet and entertaining. But's it's already the 7th week and I don't know that the judges are going to think he's got what it takes to stay in the game. The finish was quite awkward. The judges all loved him. Maybe I have way too much sugar in my system, I don't know. Did you think it was great? Scores: 8/8/8 = 24/30.

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff Tango – They danced to Ghostbusters. The man who I honestly believe is going to take home this season's mirror ball did not disappoint tonight despite what seemed to be a tough week in rehearsals. He's always on mark and always brings 150% each and every time! Len did not like his performance and that scares me! Scores: 9/8/8 = 25/30.

Nancy Grace and Tristan McManus Jive – The song they danced to (Devil in the House of the rising Sun? I don't know the name of it) was so difficult to do a jive to and although their costumes were pretty cool Nancy was not good at all. I'm sorry but she looked really off. Scores: 7/7/7 = 21/30.

Robert Kardashian and Cheryl Burke Tango – They are dancing to the Adams Family. I loved the rehearsal tape with all the pranks. Cheryl is frightened by so much. Today must be hell for her. I love the Adams Family and I loved the beginning of their tango and I really think Robert did really well and really brought it in this dance. I wonder if he's affected by his sister's divorce news. They are a close family but even he can't be all that surprised. I really enjoyed watching their Tango. Scores: 9/8/8 = 25/30.

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Paso Doble –  They danced to Beyonce's Sweet Dreams. Of course it is a Derek Hough production so the set, costumes and choreography are top notch. Based on the rehearsal package I have to wonder if Ricki is in pain while she's dancing. I still love watching this couple dance no matter what. I still think it was fabulous.  Scores: 9/9/9 = 27/30.

Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy  Samba – They danced to Werewolves of London. Teddy teaching Hope helped her even more so than when Maksim teaches her. That should tell him something. I liked the beginning of their Samba when she runs as though she's being chased. I love Hope but she still seems a little self-conscious although this dance was better than last week's. Scores: 8/8/8 = 24/30.

Team Dances:

Tonight was a double dance show with the second being a 'team' dance. The first three competitors (David Arquette, J.R. Martinez and Nancy Grace) danced a Tango to Rihanna's Disturbia. Each couple had a solo portion that will be marked and incorporated into their scores for the night. Len thought they all danced great as a group but were horrible when each couple went individual. Group dance scores: 8/7/8 = 23/30.

Team Paso Doble consisted of the remaining three couples (Robert Kardashian, Ricki Lake and Hope Solo). I really did not like the way Maks was handling Hope in their group dance. He behaved like an assh*le and the way he was slapping her chest was really unnecessary. It seems everyone else is able to bring the best out in Hope except Maks. I loved their Paso Doble group dance. Robert and Cheryl were pretty good although Robert looked REALLY intense. Hope and Maks did a good job on their dance as well although it seemed like he was whipping her around the dancefloor. And of course Derek and Ricki were the best. Derek is nothing short of genius in his choreography. Group dance scores: 9/8/9 = 26/30.

Who did you love tonight? Who do you think is going home tomorrow night?

Ralph Fiennes Nominated for Best Debut Director!

First Trailer for Ralph Fiennes' Coriolanus!

Ralph Fiennes has been nominated for the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director for his film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Coriolanus. This award is given out as part of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA)

BIFAs are the harbingers of awards season, because they’re first and they very often reflect, in a manner similar to the Independent Spirit Awards given out the day before the Oscars in LA, which way the wind is blowing at least in terms of the more mainstream independent awards bait. Last year, The King’s Speech started it’s awards run here. (Which makes festival season the harbinger of the harbinger.) Most of the notable acting nominees come from films we’ve been talking about, including Michael Fassbender (Shame), Brendan Glesson (The Guard), Rebecca Hall (The Awakening), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Neil Maskell (Kill List) and Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre). The best supporting actor and actress shortlists include Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus), Carey Mulligan (Shame), Kathy Burke, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch (all for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Three films including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Shame and Tyrannosaur have tied for the most nods with seven nominations each.

70 members viewed nearly 200 films, out of which they selected the nominations, which were decided by ballot. The winners are decided by an independent jury includes writer/directors Josh Appignanesi, and Debs Paterson, actor David Thewlis, actress Ruth Wilson and producer Charles Steel. Awards will be handed out in London on December 4.

Good enough reason to post some Coriolanus pics to celebrate, yes? I knew you’d see it my way.

Jessica Simpson Announces Her OBVIOUS Pregnancy

Jessica Simpson Announces Her OBVIOUS Pregnancy

Today must be a day of news that is neither surprising or shocking. Jessica Simpson has announced what we all know: she is pregnant. She tweeted her announcement (which is on her website) of  her dressed as a mummy holding her tummy like Beyonce did when she announced her pregnancy and tweeted:

Yes it's true, I'm going to be a mummy.

Congratulations Jessica. Despite the mystery surrounding an obvious baby bump, one thing is clear: Jessica will be a great mom.
