American Cinematheque Honors Robert Downey, Jr.

Some of Hollywood's finest gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Friday night at an event formerly known as 'The Moving Picture Ball' to honor Robert Downey, Jr. with American Cinematheque's 25th Annual Award. The award honors "an extraordinary artist in the entertainment industry who is fully engaged in his or her work and is committed to making a significant contribution to the art of the motion picture." (Whatever that means.) Past winners have included Matt Damon, Samuel L. Jackson, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Al Pacino Jodie Foster and Denzel Washington, to name but a few.

Downey asked former recipient Mel Gibson to present his award to him and was quoted as saying "Gibson had advised him to 'hug the cactus' of embracing humility and asking forgiveness when he was trying to overcome drug abuse. He then said, 'Unless you are without sin  — and if you are, you’re in the wrong f***** industry – you should forgive him and let him work again.'  Right or wrong, agree with him or not, Robert Downey Jr., is a class act, and definitely the spokesman for the positive results of a second or even a third chance. (I credit his wife Susan, who is expecting their first child together.) Also in attendance were Downey's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows costar Jared Harris and his director Guy Ritchie (with his baby-mama Jacqui Ainsley). Enjoy the pics.
