Joss Whedon, currently in the midst of filming big budget action adventure comic book movie, The Avengers, is also quietly putting the finishing touches on an apparent passion project, an updated version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The cast he's assembled includes a lot of Whedon "regulars", including Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker from "Angel", Fran Kanz and Ashley Johnson from "Dollhouse", Clark Gregg from the Whedon penned Thor, and Sean Maher and Nathan Fillion from "Firefly".
The last filmed version of this play was 1993's Branagh all-star spectacular with his then-wife Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves and Michael Keaton, among others. That version updated the action to 19th century Spain. Whedon's brings it into the 21st century for a "modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic comedy about two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words". The movie was shot in just twelve days in Santa Monica, California, in his own home and self-financed through his and his wife Kai Cole’s micro-studio, Bellwether. Much Ado About Nothing directed by Joss Whedon, is currently in post-production and should be finished in early 2012, possibly in time for the Sundance Film Festival.
