New Images from Disney’s John Carter!

New Images from Disney's John Carter!

I will forever refer to Disney's John Carter as John Carter of Mars, after the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel upon which it's based. We have a couple of new images, one which shows one of the giant White Apes that  Taylor Kitsch as the title character, encounters almost as soon as he gets to Mars. We also have a new pic of Kitsch.  John Carter also stars Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Dominic West (okay, that's enough. I can't take any more). Andrew Stanton, who won Academy Awards for Wall-E and Finding Nemo and whose other previous animated credits include Toy Story 1-3 and Monsters,Inc. makes his live-action directorial debut with this film. Stanton also co-wrote the screenplay, with novelist Michael Chabon, which makes me even more excited to see this.

Disney's official synopsis:

"John Carter–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of {US Civil} war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands."

John Carter will be released in the UK, US & Canada on 9 March 2012.

Pretty Pics from Plenty of Press Conferences!

Pretty Pics from Plenty of Press Conferences!

Have I mentioned how fond I am of alliteration? Anyway, another sign of the big movie season is all of the filmmakers out making the rounds on press junkets, promoting their wares. In New York, in just the past two days, we had Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, as well as director Tomas Alfredson, from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield from Hugo and Mark Wahlburg from Contraband, all sitting for the press conferences and having their pictures taken. Yay for us!

I’m a little disappointed Mark Strong didn’t make it to New York for the press conference, but he is expected to participate in the Variety Screening Q & A for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on December 7. I am thankful (on this the appropriate day for such things) that Colin Firth made the trip. I don’t need an excuse to look at pics of Mr. Firth. Is it my imagination or is Gary Oldman, the older he gets, losing the creepy and becoming oddly sexy?

I saw Hugo today and am completely in love with it, so I’m happy to have the opportunity to post pics of its three stars as well as director Martin Scorsese and mention it again. It’s a pure delight. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Marky Mark is already working hard to promote his new crime drama, Contraband. We’ve shown you a couple of trailers and some pics from thefilm which stars Wahlburg, Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Foster. The film opens in January.  Enjoy the pics!

Intense New Clip from A Dangerous Method with Michael Fassbender & Keira Knightley!

New Poster for A Dangerous Method!

David Crongerberg's A Dangerous Method starring Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, a woman who is a patient of both and the lover of one, deals with the intense relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud that gives birth to psychoanalysis. We’ve been talking about this one for months and I personally am ready to see the damn thing already!

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case given to him by his friend and mentor, Freud, the driven Dr. Jung takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein as his patient using the methods of his master, “the talking cure”.  Both men fall under Sabina's spell.

This is a terrific new clip, called “A Stupid Mistake”, in which Jung, expresses regret (and guilt) for his behavior and tries to end his physical &/or romantic entanglement with Spielrein.

Written by Christopher Hampton (Dangerous LiasonsAtonement), based on his play “The Talking Cure”, A Dangerous Method has been all over the festival circuit in the past few months to generally favorable reviews. It’s now playing in New York and LA for an awards qualifying run, but doesn’t open wide until January  and not until 10 February in the UK.

What the Dickens?! It’s Double the Havisham!

Holy Havisham! It's Double the Dickens!

It seems that not only do we have dueling Snow White projects in production, we’ve also got dueling Dickens! We’ve shown you the first look at Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham in David Nicholls’ adaptation of Great Expectations, directed by Mike Newell and due out next year to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth. Nicholls is said to have turned it into a “thriller” and has come up with an alternate ending(!?) As he told The Telegraph, "Dickens came up with two endings – one which is incredibly bleak and one which is unrealistically romantic and sentimental. Neither are quite satisfactory and we've come up with an ending that isn't in the book – and is somewhere in between. It draws on events in the book but takes them in a slightly different direction, but is in no way sacrilegious." Well, that remains to be seen.

In any case, the BBC is taking a different approach. Here’s your first look at Gillian Anderson,  who has been cast as their version of the tormented Miss Havisham. She certainly looks the part of the jilted Victorian bride, but so does Bonham Carter. There’s no doubt their performances will also be compared. Anderson can do period drama, she was nominated for a BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe for Dickens’ Bleak House in 2005.

The production also stars Ray Winstone as the dastardly Abel Magwitch. I adore Ray Winstone but he will have to stack up against Ralph Fiennes in Newell’s film. David Suchet (the definitive Hercule Poirot) is Mr Jaggers, and Douglas Booth (Boy George in BBC's "Worried About The Boy")  is adult Pip. Oscar Kennedy plays young Pip, young Estella is played by Izzy Meikle-Small (young Kathy in Never Let Me Go). The older Estella is Vanessa Kirby (Ruth Elms in "The Hour")

Due to be aired in December 2012, this version is a three-episode adaptation, part of a season of documentary, drama and discussion programs celebrating the work of Dickens on the BBC. I’m hoping that means PBS will pick it up so we can see it this side of the pond, too. Enjoy the pics!

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love-Hewitt & Zoe Saldana Serve Up Thanksgiving (PHOTOS)

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love-Hewitt & Zoe Saldana Serve Up Thanksgiving (PHOTOS)

The 75th Los Angeles' Mission of serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless took place yesterday where three of Hollywood's most recent single ladies Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Zoe Saldana came together to give back.

Jennifer recently split from her boyfriend whose name I didn't bother to learn because why bother. And of course Kim's split from Kris Humphries has been well-documented for the last month. Zoe Saldana's split from her long-term boyfriend (and fiance) Keith Britton of 11 years was probably the most surprising of all.

But on to the important thing: giving back. Also joining them were Zoe's sister Cicely, the legendary Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne and the uber-sexy Blair Underwood among others.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our American viewers. Have a safe and happy holiday!
