Catherine Zeta Jones on the Set of Broken City with Mark Wahlberg

Catherine Zeta Jones on the Set of Broken City with Mark WahlbergWe’ve got some more pics from the set of Broken City which is currently filming in Brooklyn with Mark Wahlberg and Catherine Zeta Jones. It’s about an ex-cop (Wahlberg) who’s trailing the wife of New York City's mayor and finds himself immersed in a larger scandal. Cops and Wahlberg seem to go together. Russell Crowe also stars, although we’ve not seen him on set yet. Can’t wait to find out where he fits in to this.

Filming just got underway and they’ll be in Brooklyn for a few weeks before moving the production down to New Orleans. I have no idea if that’s because the story calls for it or because they want to keep filming during the winter and that city can double for New York.  Catherine Zeta Jones, who will next be seen in Playing the Field due out in March with Gerard Butler, had taken a hiatus when husband Michael Douglas was ill. Now that he’s in remission, she’s been very busy of late. In addition to Broken City, she’s got Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise and Lay the Favorite with Bruce Willis and Vince Vaughn, both due out in 2012.

The rest of the cast includes Barry Pepper, Alona Tal and Natalie Martinez. Directed by Allen Hughes (One half of The Hughes Brothers responsible for The Book of EliFrom HellDead Presidents), Broken City is the first feature for screen writer Brian Tucker and already has a release date of January 13, 2013.

Grand New Images from Steven Spielberg’s War Horse!

Grand New Images from Steven Spielberg's War Horse!

Dreamworks has released some beautiful new images from Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. I don’t think there was ever a doubt that this film will be visually stunning, but if there were, these should take care of that. Some of these look like Thomas Kincaid prints for cryin’ out loud. (Not that I’m a fan per se but you get my drift)

Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse follows Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War I. Despite being too young to enlist, Albert heads to France to save his friend. It certainly looks like what we've come to expect from a big sweeping Spielberg film, complete with beautiful cinematography from frequent Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski.

The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis (Love,Actually) and Lee Hall (Billy Elliott), so I'm hazarding a guess here, but I imagine the movie will bring more than one tear to the eye, especially when you add in that typically grand score by John Williams.

The film stars Emily Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston, Toby Kebell and a whole host of great Brit character actors including Geoff Bell and Peter Mullan. Albert is played by newcomer Jeremy Irvine.

War Horse sprints into theaters in the US on December 25 and the UK on 13 January 2012

UK Trailer and Poster for The Deep Blue Sea with Rachel Weisz!

UK Trailer and Poster for The Deep Blue Sea with Rachel Weisz!

We have a new UK trailer and poster for, The Deep Blue Sea from Artificial Eye. Written and directed by Terence Davies (The House of Mirth), The Deep Blue Sea was the closing night film of the BFI London Film Festival back in October and stars Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers) and Simon Russell Beale.

Hester Collyer (Weisz) leads a privileged life in 1950s London as the beautiful wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Beale). To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage to move in with young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Hiddleston), with whom she has fallen passionately in love.

Set in post-war Britain, this adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s classic play, The Deep Blue Sea is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness – but is at heart a deeply moving love story. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what – or whom – should Hester choose?

I’m a huge fan of Mrs. Daniel Craig. Whenever she’s in something, I go. The Deep Blue Sea opens in the UK on 25 November and sometime in December in the US.

Three New Clips from A Dangerous Method!

New Poster for A Dangerous Method!

More Fassy! Woot! We have new clips from David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method starring Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender.

Mortensen plays Sigmund Freud, Fassbender, Carl Jung and Knightley Sabina Spielrein, at first a patient of both, then the lover of one, then a prominent mind in the field of psychiatry in her own right. The film is the story of the relationship between Freud and Jung  and how that relationship changes when Jung's adherence to Freud's theories is challenged by new patients Spielrein and Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel).

We haven’t seen or heard much from Vincent Cassel’s character, so I’m glad one of the clips is a snippet of a scene between Jung and Gross. “Never Suppress Anything” indeed.

2011 has become the "Year of the Fassy". In addition to A Dangerous Method, we’ve been talking about Steve McQueen's Shame, for which he’s sure to nominated for some major awards. Now that festival season has (finally) come to a close, I’m going to keep talking up that one (two more weeks until I get ot see it!) Of course the year began with Jane Eyre, followed by the upscale popcorn epic X-Men: First Class (and will be bookended by Steven Soderbergh's Haywire in January.) Next year will also see Fassbender play the android, David, in Sir Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel, Prometheus. He’s rumored to be a part of every major motion picture currently in some state of production. Of course they’re not all (or even most) true, but it’s no wonder he was just named GQ magazine’s “Breakout Man of the Year”.

Enjoy the clips. A Dangerous Method opens in NY and LA on November 23 then starts a rolling release on December 16. The UK gets it on 10 February.

Second Trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Second Trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits

"Fire those things that go BANG!”

This is the second trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and I’m already hooked. This looks like so much fun. I think Hugh Grant has his best role since Four Weddings and a Funeral. Even if he’s only animated, his natural Hugh-Grantness comes through loud and clear. This film is being distributed in the US by Sony Animation, but it's been produced by the makers of Wallace & Grommit and Chicken Run (just so you know what to expect in terms of stop-motion 'claymation'), Aardman Studios, who are also responsible for Arthur Christmas.

Pirate Captain (Grant) sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Pivan) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayak) for the Pirate of the year Award. The quest takes Captain and his crew from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London, where they meet Charles Darwin (David Tennant) among others. In the UK, this movie was called The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Apparently that was too much for us eedjits here on these shores. Whatever it's called, it looks like bloody great fun. I love that they’re using a cover of “Cum On Feel the Noize” under the trailer.

Other great character actors providing voices include Brendan Gleeson as Pirate with Gout, Martin Freeman as Pirate with Scarf, Imelda Staunton as Queen Victoria and Ashley Jensen as Surprisingly Curvaceous Pirate. The Pirates! Band of Misfits opens in the UK on 28 March and in the US on March 30.
