First Look at Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst as Adam & Eve in Upside Down

First Look at Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst as Adam & Eve in Upside Down

No, not that Adam and Eve! To my knowledge, they won't be wearing any fig leaves. They’re the main characters in the new film by Argentinian director Juan Diego Solanas (making his English language debut), Upside Down. It’s the story of two star-crossed lovers separated by opposite worlds, one up and one down, but both just out of reach of the other.  Sturgess’ Adam falls in love with a woman when he sees her on his tv screen when he’s a kid. His love grows, but she lives in an inverted universe with its own gravity, separate from his. Thanks to Jim Sturgess Online, we have some great first images to share. They give us a first look at the characters and a few hints at what the special effects might be like.

I've never heard of a single other member of the cast, although one, Neil Napier, played "Spartan with a Stick" in 300. I like Kirsten Dunst. She was clearly the best thing about the unrelentingly depressing Melancholia. Jim Sturgess is just plain adorable. but if he didn’t cut through his penchant for wacky, trippy (Across the Universe) or just plain sappy (One Day) with something meaty and dramatic once in a while, like his role as Janusz  in Peter Weir’s The Way Back, I’d probably go right off him.

Upside Down just has a vague 2012 as a release date right now. I’m thinking this may be headed for TIFF in the fall.

Pierce Brosnan Premieres his Bag of Bones!

Pierce Brosnan Premieres his Bag of Bones!

A&E hosted a Premiere Party for their new dramatic mini-series, "Stephen King's Bag of Bones" at Fig & Olive Restaurant in  West Hollywood last night, Thursday December 8. The cast of the mini including Pierce Brosnan, Annabeth Gish, Anika Noni Rose, William Schallert (I had no idea he was still around. You go Bill!) and  Doris Roberts along with director Mick Garris (The Bodyguard) all showed up and posed for pics. (The future porn star in the turquoise tutu is Caitlin Carmichael.)

Based on the novel by Stephen King (duh), “Stephen King’s Bag of Bones” is the story of Mike Noonan (Brosnan), an author living in Derry, Maine who suffers from severe writer's block after the death of his wife.  While that sounds pretty good, there is only one reason for posting these pics and I think you know what that is. Mr. Suave and Debonair himself, Pierce Brosnan has been making the rounds in promotion of the show. (He and Craig Ferguson discussed the appropriate amount of body hair that James Bond should have, last night on The Late Late Show.)

Also starring Melissa George, Jason Priestley and Matt Frewer, “Stephen King’s Bag of Bones”  airs this Sunday December 11 on A&E.

Poster for Mel Gibson in How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Poster for Mel Gibson in How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Odds are you haven’t even heard of How I Spent My Summer Vacation with Mel Gibson. Written by Gibson and director Adrian Grunberg, who has an extensive resume as a second unit director and has worked with Gibson on Apocalypto and Edge of Darkness, How I Spent My Summer Vacation is a return to the action genre that Gibson does very well. In the film a career criminal (Gibson) nabbed by Mexican authorities, is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy (Kevin Hernandez). We’re talking about it today because a new poster has just been released. I like it. It looks like a throwback to gritty 70s actioners. Taking place in Mexico I expect dry, hot and dusty and that Mel may remind me of early Clint (Eastwood.) What can I say, hope springs eternal. C’mon, Mel needs the money. He’s got all those kids, not to mention massive amounts of THERAPY, to pay for.

Other than Gibson and Peter Stormare (always interesting to watch), the cast is pretty C-list, tv movie-of-the-week staples, although I do like Scott Cohen (especially on USA’s “Necessary Roughness”. Here he’s playing a lawyer. What are the odds he’ll be smarmy?) and I’ve liked Patrick Bauchau since“The Pretender”.

Originally scheduled for a 2011 release, I’m thinking the failure of The Beaver had something to do with it being pushed back. (The reasons why that film flopped are too numerous to get into here.) Right now, How I Spent My Summer Vacation only has release dates for Sweden (April 13) and The Netherlands (June 7).

Cheryl Burke Designs Active-Wear Collection For Macy’s

Cheryl Burke Designs Active-Wear Collection For Macy's

Dancing With The Stars' professional Cheryl Burke is expanding her horizons and has a deal with Macy's to design an active-wear collection called 'Ideology' for the department store. By designing this collection, she is definitely appealing to the majority of women by addressing our issues when she sat down with StyleList:

"I feel like I am definitely curvy. I'm petite with hips. I've got boobs! I have an ass!" Even though she has a body that many admire, Burke admitted: "I'm insecure about fat bulging up. With exercise pants, the elastic is often too tight and you start seeing fat pop out. With these [Ideology exercise pants] everything is flat and nothing is coming over the waistband."

Amen sister! I now love Cheryl Burke and will worship her until the day I die. Slimming or not, black isn't always the way to go:

"I always wore black, because it's so slimming. Normally I would just wear black pants with a sports bra and a baggy t-shirt to work out." "If I feel fat in what I'm wearing, I'm not going to go out and go to the treadmill and start running. It's the worst feeling ever."

At this point I'm thinking she's in my head and reading my thoughts. Mind you this biatch don't run. That's the only difference, but isn't it the truth that if your clothes are too tight exercising is just the worst?

It isn't just dancing that keeps this profession in shape, she does jazzercise:

It has helped me stay in shape," she said, "I'm a dancer, obviously, but sometimes it's fun to be able to dance alone and listen to good music and work out at the same time. Doing jazzercise, I burn 600-700 calories an hour!"

Sign me up! Macy's had their Ideology launch last Wednesday night at the Dream Hotel in New York City but the brand won't be available until February, 2012.

Guy Ritchie Has News, Brings Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Back to London for Gala Premiere!

Guy Ritchie Has News, Brings Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Back to London for Gala Premiere!

Guy Ritchie shot Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in London in the Fall and early Winter of 2010. Now  a year later, he’s brought the finished product back for a lavish premiere in London’s Leicester Square on Thursday December 8. Joining Guy Ritchie (and his baby mama Jacqui Ainsley) on the red carpet were stars Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, the lovely Kelly Reilly and even Stephen Fry! It is evident from the pics, some of which look like candids from a frat party, that they were having a ball together. Clearly the chemistry RDJ and Jude Law exhibit on screen is genuine.

In other Guy Ritchie News, Deadline has reported that

“Warner Bros is making a deal with Guy Ritchie and his new partner Lionel Wigram to come aboard The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the film that Steven Soderbergh left just recently over budget and difficulty with casting after George Clooney dropped out. Based on the classic TV show, the film has a script by Scott Z. Burns.  Ritchie and Wigram are forming a shingle together after making the Sherlock Holmes films. The intention is for Ritchie to direct the film.

This would be the first project under the new shingle for the British director and producer…”

They have a deal that starts in January. Meanwhile, Warners has been trying to make a big-screen version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for twenty years.

Scott Z. Burns is responsible for the scripts for The Bourne Ultimatum, The Informant and Contagion. Lionel Wigram wrote the story upon which 2009’s Sherlock Holmes was based (although he’s been a producer for more than twenty years).

Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows opens December 16.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting Gets a Trailer – Expects An Audience

Everything I expected when I first heard there was to be a movie called What to Expect When You’re Expecting has come to pass. I just watched the trailer for Kirk Jones’ (Everybody’s Fine, Nanny McPhee, Waking Ned Devine -  a cv that would suggest better than this) film, based on the popular non-fiction self-help book by Heidi Murkoff, that has this innocuous plot summary: “A look at the lives of five couples as they prepare to become parents.”  Okay that fits. It also fits the synopsis for a documentary, which is what this book deserved, not a He’s Just Not that Into You, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve celebrity mashup. Maybe What to Expect When You’re Expecting is the love child of all of those other films.

I swear I just stared at the screen in slack-jawed wonder. Is it just me? What to Expect When You’re Expecting (an unwieldy title I’m not looking forward to typing until it’s released in May) was written by Shauna Cross (Whip It), Heather Hach (Freaky Friday) and stars Elizabeth Banks, Matthew Morrison, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, Rodrigo Santoro, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Dennis Quaid Chris Rock (Chris Rock??), Wendy McClendon-Covey etc etc etc (Seriously, the cast list is HUGE). It opens May 11 in the US and 18th May in the UK.
