Funny or In Poor Taste? Posters for Jean Dujardin in Les Infideles

Funny or In Poor Taste? Posters for Jean Dujardin in Les Infideles

One of our new favorites, Jean Dujardin has a new film coming out later this month and it’s got some people up in arms. Les Infidels is a French comedy filled with what Europeans do best, sex and nudity, played for laughs and not taking itself too seriously.

There is a definitely not-suitable-for-work trailer at the link. Let’s just say we see a lot more of Dujardin and his costars than we do in The Artist. Which just proves that while Dujardin may be enjoying a love affair with America at the moment, he’s like that crush you had on The Backstreet Boys until they got married or went to rehab and suddenly didn’t look as attractive. Which is silly. We’re adults not adolescents, even if the French are way more sophisticated than the rest of us. Seriously, in his native country, Dujardin is known as an actor and a comedian.  If you really want to know what he’s is about (as well as director Michel Hazanavicius) check out the spy spoofs OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies or its sequel OSS 117: Lost in Rio. Hilarious.

Actually, the real problem is the posters produced to promote Les Infidels. They are rather…suggestive. What’s funny is that they’ve been deemed too suggestive for the French.

In the poster featuring Dujardin, he’s seen between a woman’s upside-down legs and the caption, “I’m going into a meeting.”

Gilles Lellouche;s poster (Dujardin’s costar) has a woman’s head in his crotch and the actor saying into a phone, “The line’s going to cut, I’m entering a tunnel.”

France’s advertising standards authority (ARPP) asked that they be removed because the posters “present a degrading image of women.” Managing director Stephane Martin noted that the advertisements “are clearly meant to provoke, shock a certain part of the public since they propagate the image of a woman harming her own dignity and decency.” Huh?

I would have expected a reaction like that from the Hayes office in Hollywood circa 1935, but France in 2012? America’s close-mindedness appears to be catching.

Speaking of Hollywood in 1935, I had to include some pics of Dujardin during this year's awards season. Does he epitomize old Hollywood glamour or is it just me?
