We have a mini featurette for Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This is basically the first trailer intercut with some remarks by the filmmakers and a few brief glimpses of some behind-the-scenes moments. Not that I’m complaining by any stretch. This movie is near the top of my “must see” list this year. The producers seem intent on getting us pumped and keeping us there since we’ve been getting quite a few little goodies, in the form of posters, pics and trailers, of late.

The movie centers on the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold history that shaped our nation. As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war – and ultimately to the presidency – he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter costars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk and Rufus Sewell. It hits theaters June 22  in the US and Canada and 2^nd August in the UK. Men in Black III is a musical. As you can plainly see from the above pic, Will Smith is in the midst of filming one of the big Busby Berkeley –esque numbers at the heart of the film…

Nah…I’m lying.  His character, J, is actually late for an audition of an early version of TheVillage People.

No, that’ s not It either.  He’s just running over the top of a car, as the caption indicates, “Big Willie Style”.   

We have a few new pics courtesy of Empire and a new poster via Comingsoon. The pics feature new looks at J along with Josh Brolin as a younger version of K (Tommy Lee Jones).  The poster puts all three of them together, but Smith is front and center.

In Men in Black III, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Men in Black III, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who helmed the last two, opens in, what else, 3D on May 25 throughout the galaxy.

Well…there’s a new international trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship, but I have to say it’s no more illuminating that the others we’ve seen. I doubt anything I say will make a difference as to whether or not you’re interested in seeing it either. I’m all for escapist entertainment, especially during the summer months when it doesn’t take much to get me into an air-conditioned theater.  Given the budget and the talent involved here, it would be nice if they’d produced something a cut above the usual sound and fury of most summer action adventure tent-poles. For all of the money spent on this, it just looks like bits and pieces of stuff we’ve already seen, all strung together.

What is Liam Neeson doing in this, besides playing a stereotypical, “you’re-not-good-enough-to-marry-my-daughter”, hard-assed career military jar-head? And Taylor Kitsch gets the wild-card-maverick-hot-shot role that John Carter will either make palatable or this will be two major missteps in a row. Brooklyn Decker gets to be Liv Tyler (Seriously, does none of this put you in mind of Armageddon?) I’m sure I could match up the rest of the cast with either a “type” or an actual character from another movie – if I cared that much.

Well, take a look at the trailer and decide for yourself. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Maybe this will be a subtle and nuanced exploration of how our alien overlords came to be hibernating in the watery depths of the Earth’s oceans and when awakened, they want only to share their culture for the betterment of mankind. And Rihanna will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress in her first role.  Maybe.  In any case, I’m sure Kitsch, Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and company will look good in their dress whites

Battleship opens 11^th April in the UK and May 18 in the US.

I meant to bring you this new UK trailer and the accompanying poster for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen way back on Valentine’s Day, but it somehow got lost in the shuffle. That I just got a ticket to a sneak preview jogged my memory, so I’m sharing them with you now.  Call me crazy, but as jaded and cynical as I consider myself to be, I have high hopes for this one. (Plus it's filmed partly in Scotland…with kilts…)

What this film has going for it is director Lasse Hallström. His films are almost always a quirky look at the human condition (My Life As  A Dog, Once Around, Cider House Rules) full of a lot of heart and he can even do all-out romance like Chocolate. (I’m not going to discuss Dear John). This film also has two charismatic leads in Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor (even if they are overly photoshopped in the posters). The supporting cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas (speaking English again. LOVE her reaction to the kilts!), Rachel Stirling (who appeared with Blunt in The Young Victoria) and Amr Waked as the visionary Sheikh who sets everything in motion. While technically a “romantic comedy”, it’s not your standard “rom-com”.  It’s of the kinder, gentler variety.

As I said this poster and trailer are aimed at the UK market and yet we, here in the US, get the film nearly a month and a half before they do on 20^th April.   I’ve seen nothing here and it opens in a little more than two weeks, on March 9.  What gives?  (I think I have to stop believing that the folks who make the decisions about how to market a film are inherently smarter than I am. Why would I assume that given how many times I’ve been left scratching my head this year alone? Pffft…)

As promised, here’s the first video blog from Skyfall director Sam Mendes. Skyfall is currently shooting in London with Daniel Craig making his third outing as James Bond and Dame Judi Dench returning as M.

I actually wouldn’t call this a “video blog” at least how we’ve come to know them from Peter Jackson’s use of the term and the medium to document the making of The Hobbit films. There’s no footage of the actual film, none of Dench, and only a fleeting glimpse of Craig, no sneak peeks at Ralph Fiennes or Javier Bardem. It seems to be  more of a Mendes interview, in which he mentions his personal feelings about Bond and the legacy he’s been handed, as well as Daniel Craig as Bond in particular.

I’m making two assumptions based on this clip. One it’s probably only the start of updates we’ll be getting (that might be wishful thinking on my part), as I think Mendes has decided if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, or at least control the flow.  I also think this is probably part of a “making of” for the dvd release. We’ll see. I can’t think about dvd now. That’s a year away. I’m too excited for Skyfall’s theatrical release this fall.  Even though it’s still shooting, Skyfall hits theaters in the UK on 26^th October and November 9 here on this side of the pond.

I told you the publicity machine was kicking into gear for this film, but I had no idea it was already in hyper-drive. Jennifer Lawrence,last year's Oscar nominee, this year she's shilling a movie in front of The Gap and Things Remembered.
