Adrien Brody, Andre Benjamin and Gael Garcia Bernal Clean Up Nice

Adrien Brody, Andre Benjamin and Gael Garcia Bernal Clean Up Nice

Actually, according to Gillette, they are "Masters of Style". Mr. Benjamin's wardrobe was certainly seriously stylish. Love the boater. Gael Garcia Bernal always looks the same to me, but okay.  I do find it amusing that Adrien Brody has been given that title since more often than not, his style choices are the object of, if not outright derision, at least some serious head scratching. (Not me. I love that he marches to the beat of his own fashion drummer. He'll wear a tux to a casual event and go cas to a black-tie affair. That video from the Prada menswear runway show in Milan a couple of weeks ago? That was like porn. What? TMI?) It's akin to L'Oreal hiring Gerard Butler to hawk men's skin care. (C'mon! He's gorgeous, but he needs some sunscreen!)

This Gillette ad is fun to watch, but I have to wonder how effective it'll be. I had to go back and look up what exactly it was they were trying to sell. It's the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler, but all I was focused on was the eye candy.  Then again, it's possible that I'm not their target market.

Brody on his "style" (I could watch it with the sound off…maybe that's just me)

We've also got some pics from the French premiere of Adrien Brody's new film, Detachment.  Oh yes…seriously stylish.

Adrien Brody and Gary Oldman On the Catwalk Yeah on the Catwalk

Adrien Brody and Gary Oldman On the Catwalk Yeah on the Catwalk

There has been a trend among designers, particularly designers who become associated with celebrities (think Gaultier and Madonna, Charlize Theron and Dior), to use famous faces in their runway shows. This is the first time it’s been done on the menswear side. Miuccia Prada really scored for her first time. Prada surprised her audience Sunday afternoon in Milan by casting several famous faces, most of which are not particularly known for their fashion sense, to walk in her Menswear F/W 2012/2013 show, thereby ensuring a bit more press than menswear usually generates. An Academy Award winner and a probable nominee? Wow. The designer managed to wrangle Adrien Brody and Gary Oldman, as well as Willem Dafoe, Tim Roth, Jamie Bell, Emile Hirsch and Garrett Hedlund, in addition, of course, to a collection of walking mannequins. I will say that this group looked more suited to the clothes than I’ve ever seen before. They looked like they could all have come from the set of The Blue Angel or Wings. There were some elements of what appeared to be the Red Baron's uniform, definitely Prussian military inspired, as well as some touches of Edwardian lounge-wear. Old school glamour and attention to detail meets the clean lines and updated construction of the 21st century. The theme of the show involved “the comings and goings of players and power” and the entire spectacular collection had both a vintage feel and a very, very modern edge; a dichotomy that was emphasized by the choice of music (techno-electronica laced with an operatic chorus laced with strings) to which the models walked in a show that was “a cinematic character study, subverting male archetypes and formal codes of dress.” Everything looked haute couture and yet accessible. Fantastic!

So how’d the actors do? Well, I’ve read that some felt Hirsch, Bell and Roth were too short for the clothes. I don’t care, I thought they looked fantastic. Bell in particular. Tim Roth looked like he was having a good time and yet maintained a sense of decorum, unlike Garrett Hedlund who bopped along like a kindergartner in his first pageant, making eye contact with individual audience members (a definite no-no), flailing his hands (at one point he grabbed his own ass) and then miming the piano at the end. It was probably just nervous energy, but despite the fact that he looked good in the clothes, it was too muc, he broke character and he looked like an ass.

The stars of the show were definitely Dafoe, Brody and Oldman. All three looked positively regal. I’ve never seen Dafoe look better. Brody was probably the most natural and yet he stayed completely in character. His body type is ideal and his loping, drop-shouldered gait was exactly right for walking that big room. (And oh my god, that red brocade frock coat, his slicked back hair, those sunglasses…I need a moment) And Gary Oldman…I’ve been saying for months, since the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy press junket started back at Cannes, that he’s lost the creepy and has found some sexy.

I may have mentioned my love of men’s clothes on one or two previous occasions. The video below is like porn as far as I’m concerned. Take a look. Brava Miuccia!

New Trailer and New Poster for Adrien Brody in Detachment

New Trailer and New Poster for Adrien Brody in Detachment

A new domestic trailer for Tony Kaye’s Detachment has been released by Tribeca Films. I think you can tell the film is finally poised for release to theater by how much more accessible this one seems than the previous trailers. We not only get a better handle on who Adrien Brody’s character is but we get better glimpses of the supporting players. The cast has a lot of depth, it’s a good idea to let a potential audience get a peek at who’s involved here, including Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks and Bryan Cranston.

The new poster is a great match for this trailer. Brody looks like an island of calm in a sea of chaos. He is calm, but the calm, ‘detached’ façade is just that I suspect.

Tribeca Film will finally let us seen Detachment on February 24 via Movies On Demand, iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU and other platforms before it opens in theaters in select cities beginning March 16.

Oscars Have First Rehearsal in Palm Springs!

Oscars Have First Rehearsal in Palm Springs!

The 23rd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which typically honors some of the year’s best films and filmmakers, held their Awards Gala, last night which featured the likes of Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Al Pacino, Glenn Close and Tom Hanks, to name just a few.

Melissa McCarthy gave Octavia Spencer was given the Breakthrough Performance Award for The Help. (How that didn’t go to Jessica Chastain is beyond me. She was there, giving her Salome director, Al Pacino an award. And what the f*ck is up with his hair?!?)  Stephen Daldry won Director of the Year for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which was presented by his star, Tom Hanks.

Adrien Brody, who has gotten rid of the scruff (which somehow makes me sad), awarded Gary Oldman the International Star Award. (It seems to me that they come up with awards to hand out to the major players of any given year. There can only be one “Best Actor” so they figure out some other way to get the stars on the red carpet, like having them hand out the awards. The whole thing is essentially a practice run for the carpet outside the Kodak Theater in February.)

Brody handed the award to Oldman then they both pretended to smoke from the thing since it looks like bong. Oldman joked, "It's true. I may smoke this later." To which Brody replied, "If you want to pass that while you speak, I can take care of that for you."

George Clooney, as he accepted the Chairman’s Award agreed, "They're right, this does look like a bong! Thanks for this!" He also had something to say about Oldman's remarkable acting career. "Keep acting Gary Oldman, you're f*cking it up for the rest of us."

Patton Oswalt accepted the Vanguard Award for the cast of Young Adult. When he remarked on Charlize Theron's ability to transform herself into a serial killer in Monster as well as her character in Young Adult, Theron snuck up behind him and growled. Good to know they don’t dislike each other as much as the red carpet photos would seem to indicate. In fact Theron jokingly passed Oswalt a note for him to read: “She's really awesome. She's really nice and she did not hit me with a rolled up copy of Rolling Stone when I mentioned 'Aeon Flux.'"

Jonah Hill introduced his Moneyball co-star Brad Pitt by talking about Tree of Life. "I've seen it three times, and I have no idea what it’s about".

Pitt came back with, "And thank you to my lover, Jonah Hill. Ass." Speaking of Pitt, he and Angie did the red carpet thing and just when I think they look like they’ve been replaced by their Madame Tussaud’s replicas, they do something genuine. Check out that ‘awwww’ inducing pic below.

My new crush is Jean DuJardin, the star of The Artist who was there, along with costar Berenice Bejo, to support the director Michael Hazanavicius.  (Bejo is also Hazanavicius’ partner.) He’s adorable!  Someone find him something to do in English. *spoiler alert* I want to hear more of “With pleasure” said in that accent.

Then there’s Clooney and his current squeeze, Stacy Keibler. Sorry George, you know I love you and want only the best for you, but if this is real I’ll eat my keyboard.  Proving once again that he’s a class act, Clooney told the audience as he accepted the final award of the night, "You don't have to do this for us. We really do love what we do. … We really do understand that we're very blessed and we're very lucky to be doing this."

He mentioned the humanitarian work of some of the actors in attendance (umm…he got most of them involved) and also thanked studios. "The truth is — and we don't really want to tell all those guys — we'd do this for free.”

By the way, Clooney told The Wrap that he’s already started “his next project, writing, directing and starring in a big-budget movie about the men who chased down the stolen art of Europe during World War Two.” Excellent!

Something unique about this event:  it’s not just another opportunity for stars to dress up and give each other awards. It also helped raise $1.6 million for educational programs in the Palm Springs area. That being said, the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala, which comes after all of the various guild and association awards have been given out,  kicks off the glamorous portion of Awards season. Expect to see all of these people next week at the Golden Globes and then again in February come Oscar night.

New International Trailer for Detachment with Adrien Brody!

New International Trailer for Detachment with Adrien Brody!

There’s a new international trailer for Tony Kaye’s Detachment starring Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a teacher with a talent to connect with the students perfectly, but spends his time hiding his gift and poses as a substitute teacher. Henry avoids any emotional connection with the students (and his colleagues). The nature of his job lets him leave before the going gets tough until he finds himself in a public school where he quickly becomes a role model for the students and he meets someone who forces him to connect, to be present until he realizes he doesn’t have to be alone in the world.

In addition to Brody, the film stars James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, Tim Blake Nelson, Bryan Cranston and William Petersen.

I’ve been talking about Detachment since last April when it was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, in fact it’s been travelling around to the smaller festivals all year.  I really can’t wait to see it. France, it seems will be giving it a wide release starting February 1. It will be available in the US via VOD starting February 24. It’ still supposed to get a theatrical run, but I’m guessing it will be very limited.

Two New Clips for Adrien Brody in Detachment

Lovely New Poster for Detachment with Adrien Brody

We have two new clips for Tony Kaye’s Detachment starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody. We’ve talked about this film before and the fact that I’m looking forward to it. In the film, Brody plays a disconnected substitute teacher Henry Barthes struggling to find his way. He bounces from school to school, avoiding any sort of attachment (hence, the title) to his students, but a placement at an underprivileged school with a student body looking for inspiration becomes his chance at salvation.

Henry Barthes Needs Someone to Talk To

Henry Barthes Loses His Cool

The film screened at the Tribeca Film Festival last spring and IFC films finally picked it up but they  are taking their time releasing it. You’d think they would have wanted to capitalize on the great reception Brody’s turn as Salvador Dali received in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. Perhaps if that film gets some awards recognition (which it might. The screenplay is being talked up as well as Corey Stoll’s performance as Ernest Hemingway), then Detachment might get a bit of a bounce.

Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston and James Caan also star. Detachment hits Video on Demand February 24th, and theaters in March.
