Aliens are Coming to Sink Your Battleship!

Aliens are Coming to Sink Your Battleship!

Well…there’s a new international trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship, but I have to say it’s no more illuminating that the others we’ve seen. I doubt anything I say will make a difference as to whether or not you’re interested in seeing it either. I’m all for escapist entertainment, especially during the summer months when it doesn’t take much to get me into an air-conditioned theater.  Given the budget and the talent involved here, it would be nice if they’d produced something a cut above the usual sound and fury of most summer action adventure tent-poles. For all of the money spent on this, it just looks like bits and pieces of stuff we’ve already seen, all strung together.

What is Liam Neeson doing in this, besides playing a stereotypical, “you’re-not-good-enough-to-marry-my-daughter”, hard-assed career military jar-head? And Taylor Kitsch gets the wild-card-maverick-hot-shot role that John Carter will either make palatable or this will be two major missteps in a row. Brooklyn Decker gets to be Liv Tyler (Seriously, does none of this put you in mind of Armageddon?) I’m sure I could match up the rest of the cast with either a “type” or an actual character from another movie – if I cared that much.

Well, take a look at the trailer and decide for yourself. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Maybe this will be a subtle and nuanced exploration of how our alien overlords came to be hibernating in the watery depths of the Earth’s oceans and when awakened, they want only to share their culture for the betterment of mankind. And Rihanna will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress in her first role.  Maybe.  In any case, I’m sure Kitsch, Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and company will look good in their dress whites

Battleship opens 11th April in the UK and May 18 in the US.

HBO Golden Globes After Party PHOTOS

HBO Golden Globes After Party PHOTOS

True Blood hotties Joe Manganiello, Sam Trammell and Alexander Skarsgard made their way to the HBO after party following last night's 2012 Golden Globes and we are eternally grateful that they did.

Along with those sexy vampires, werewolves and shape shifters the INCREDIBLE Jane Fonda attended this bash. When she came out on stage at last night's show, I almost fell off he couch. She looks better now  than she ever did. She readily admits she's had plastic surgery but seriously she doesn't have that puffed, pulled-back look that a lot of celebrities half her age have. I can't get over how gorgeous she is.

Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco attended coming off of her impressive stint as host for the People's Choice Awards.

Laura Dern is white-knuckling a bottle of champagne following her win. Check out all the winners and red carpet arrivals as well as our top picks for best dressed.

2nd Louder, More Chaotic Battleship Trailer!

2nd Louder, More Chaotic Battleship Trailer!

Well, after having watched the second trailer a few times, I’m not really any more enthused about Battleship (ostensibly based on the board game of the same name but the similarities end there) than I was after the first one. Universal has dropped a new ‘feature trailer’ for its Spring/Summer 2012 tent-pole release. It’s about twenty seconds longer than the initial trailer, but it still reeks of ‘Transformers-At-Sea’.  In fact, it’s difficult to believe that this is not Michael Bay, but a Peter Berg film. Producer/director Berg is capable of nuance and character development (Friday Night Lights) as well as intelligent action (The Kingdom). Michael Bay…not so much. He just likes to blow things up.  And this looks like a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Synopsis: A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.

Here’s a look at the new trailer.

Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, Liam Neeson as Admiral Shane, Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, Alex’s fiancé, and you guessed it, the Admiral’s daughter (cue power ballad), Jesse Plemmons (I love how “Friday Night Lights” co-star Kitsch is now an adult but Plemmons is still playing a boy), Peter MacNichol as the Secretary of Defense and Rihanna in her big screen debut, as Petty Officer Raikes.

Battleship starts chumming the waters on 20th April in the UK and May 18 in the US and Canada. We also have new posters and stills to share. Enjoy.

Watch as Real Heroes Set Out to Keep Your Battleship Afloat!

Watch as Real Heroes Set Out to Keep Your Battleship Afloat!

You know, I think I conjured this up. I was thinking (and not in a good way) just the other day that we hadn’t heard anything about Battleship in a while. I was sort of hoping maybe I’d dreamt it up in the first place. Well, silly me. Universal Studios just released the first featurette for director Peter Berg's Battleship which is set for release next year. It’s called ‘Real Heroes’ and in it we get to hear from the US Marines and Naval personnel that worked on the film. Most of the extras that you’ll see in this movie are real Marines doing the jobs they do every day and, if nothing else, will lend a look and feel of authenticity to Berg’s ‘vision’. (I have my doubts as to whether a big screen version of a boardgame deserves the USMC and USN, but Berg deserves an 'A for effort'.)

The synopsis: A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. We’ve already shown you a trailer and some images, now take a look at the featurette.

Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Tadanobu Asano, Jesse Plemons and Rihanna in her feature debut.

Battleship sails into the UK on 20 April and the US & Canada on May 18 (What’s up with that??)

Alexander Skarsgard Covers Out Magazine, LOVES Being Naked

Alexander Skarsgard Covers Out Magazine, LOVES Being Naked

I believe I may actually be dead and am typing this from my house in heaven. True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard covers the latest issue of Out Magazine where he talks sex, nudity, violence and his love for his country Sweden. After reading the interview I now love Sweden and I've never been there. But if it produced a decent hottie like him who is so at ease with his sexuality it's a great thing in my books:

"I'm not a prude," Skarsgård said. "I'm from Sweden, and it's different there. If it makes sense, I'll do nudity, and it's made sense every single time I'm naked on the show. And I love to be naked. It's kind of liberating."

He's always surprised by how people are so ill-at-ease with sex and nudity:

"That always strikes me as weird because parents in the States freak out if their kids see a nipple or a butt cheek, but at the same time they're OK with their kids watching people bash each other's heads in with baseball bats," he says. Skarsgård should know; there were few eyelashes batted at his ultra-violent remake of "Straw Dogs," but his abs are a constant source of conversation. "I notice in interviews in the U.S. all people want to talk about is nudity. You have a half-hour interview, and you spend 25 minutes talking about the nude scenes, and of course, if it makes sense as a scene, I'll do it."

I have to agree with him on that. Nudity and sex are a beautiful thing whereas violence really has zero redeeming qualities. I just wish they showed frontal nudity on men in film and TV. It's about time we leveled the playing field in the nudity department.

New Images from Melancholia Now With More Kiefer Sutherland!

New Images from Melancholia Now With More Kiefer Sutherland!

Here are some new images from Lars von Trier's apocalyptic drama, Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Gainsbourg and John Hurt. The director has described his film as a "beautiful movie about the end of the world".

Here's the synopsis: Justine (Dunst), a woman suffering from an extreme case of clinical depression, celebrates her marriage with a extravagant reception that is marred by bickering family members, leaving the bride feeling withdrawn. The following morning Justine notices a planet, with no orbit of its own, hurtling toward Earth. And as the newlyweds are helpless against Justine's depression ruining their marriage, the entire wedding party can do nothing but freak out and watch as the world comes to an end.

Yahoo's got an exclusive new MOTION poster for the film, with a snippet of music as well, that is very cool. You have to head over there to see it.

Already available from VOD, Melancholia opens in theaters in NY and LA (Oscar run!) on November 11.
