The Doorman is Intimidating in New Clip & Intl Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man!

Woo Hoo! Watch the First Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man!

In a new clip from The Amazing Spider-Man, it’s Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) vs the UWS doorman: he of the last line of defense, all that stands between the lords of the manor at which he stands vigil and the riff-raff who habituate the urban jungle a few concrete feet away. This particular doorman seems to moonlight for Homeland Security. Since he’s eliminated the obvious reasons for the kid to be darkening his door (he’s not a messenger and he’s not there to be tutored) he’s not letting Pete up to see his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) unless he gets a look in that bag.

This new international trailer (English with French subtitles) gives us a little more footage than we saw in the domestic version a couple of weeks ago, including a couple of shots of Spider-Man leaping between buildings:

Did you catch the reference to the situation in the clip? “Your doorman’s intimidating.” I’m guessing Peter Parker chose not to reveal what was in the bag.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Woo Hoo! Watch the First Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man!

Woo Hoo! Watch the First Trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man!

Whoa! This is seriously cool! Fresh on the heels of yesterday’s planet-wide sneak peek event in Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Mexico City, Moscow, New York City, Paris, Rio de Janiero, Rome, Seoul, Sydney and Tokyo,  Sony Pictures has released the first two minutes and thirty four seconds of footage for Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield as Spider Man nee Peter Parker. Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy  (NOT Mary Jane Watson), to the rest of us here in the wide world of web. (While those at the Amazing Spider-Man conventions got to see the trailer as well as seven minutes of additional footage.)

I may have been on the fence when Garfield was first announced as the heir to the Spidey suit, but I’ve since seen his work in Never Let Me Go and  The Social Network and I think, in my humble opinion, he’s perfect for the role. This Peter Parker is still in high school and stars off as a gangly, unsure teenager. I’d imagine that’s not too far from Garfield’s own experience.

Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner.

Take a look at this:

So? Was I right? By all accounts it is truly A-MAZ-ING in 3D. Now, you know how I feel about 3D in general but after Hugo, even I have to admit it does seem to have its uses. I think superhero movies probably qualify.

The Amazing Spider-Man, which also stars Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and C. Thomas Howell, opens in 3D on July 3 here in the US. I’m sure we’ll have much more to come.

Official Synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man + New Pics!

Another reason to look forward to summer this year, Spider Man will be back on the big screen. Columbia Pictures has finally released the official synopsis for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man:

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.”

Lots of Amazing New Images from The Amazing Spider-Man!

Lots of Amazing New Images from The Amazing Spider-Man!

Sony/Columbia has released some new hi-res stills from The Amazing Spider-Man. Some of them you may have already seen since we brought the versions with copy from EW or Empire. These are crisp and clean. We also have some new posters and concept art.  I have to say, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, despite the fact that both are in their mid to late twenties  (she’s 23, he’s 28), look convincing as high schoolers.

This version of Spiderman, directed by Marc Webb, goes back to the web slinger’s angsty teenage roots:

“Like most teenagers his age, Peter (Garfield) is trying to figure out who he is and how to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father (Campbell Scott) held… a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story.”

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Garfield, Stone, Rhys Ifans (as Dr. Curt Connors in the first film in which the character becomes The Lizard), Denis Leary, Irrfan Khan, Annie Parisse, C. Thomas Howell, Embeth Davidtz, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The screenplay is by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. It’s scheduled for release on July 3rd in the US, 4th July in the UK, in 3D, of course.

Some Super Super Hero Pics!

Some Super Super Hero Pics!

Here are some great new images from The Amazing Spider-Man as well as The Avengers! The Spider Man reboot has been generating a lot of buzz, since it was announced really, but in the last few weeks certainly.  Empire, by way of ComicBookMovie has offered up some great images of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker (and one as Spiderman menacing someone who looks like Denis Leary) and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy

Peter Parker is going back to high school when director Marc Webb’s (500 Days of Summer) The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. The film focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The Amazing Spider-Man opens in theaters July 3 in the US and Canada and 4th July in the UK

I have to say, I’m much more excited about The Avengers. The assembled company of this film is outrageous. In addition to Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, both pictured here, we have Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The Avengers have only ever previously assembled in cartoon form and it’s taken until someone like Joss Whedon, with a true comic book geek’s sensibilities and an auteur’s talents to get it done on film. (Or for whatever passes for film these days. A microchip perhaps. We certainly can’t say ‘celluloid’ anymore.)

As for the pics posted here, Hemsworth told Empire that there is obvious tension between his Thor and Evans’ Captain America as you would when alphas used to being top dog are all massed together in one place. "There's a couple of shots in the trailer of Thor and Captain America duking it out and that gives you an idea of how well they get along at the beginning…" The instigator of course, is Loki. “I think it's heartbreaking because{Thor} feels very responsible for why Loki has spiraled off. He keeps trying to appeal to whatever good was once there."  Much more on The Avengers is revealed in the mag when it goes on sale next week.

The Avengers comes to theaters 27th April in the UK and May 4 in the US and Canada.

Holy Spidey-Sense Batman! Two new Super Hero Movie Posters!

Holy Spidey-Sense Batman! Two new Super Hero Movie Posters!

On the same day that a new poster dropped for the appropriately named Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider Man, we also got a new poster for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Is there some Super Hero rivalry going on here? Batman trying to steal Spidey’s thunder? A coincidence? That would mean Columbia and/or Warner Brothers was going about things willy-nilly and one didn’t know what the other was doing? You believe that? I don’t, especially since The Dark Knight Rises has been in the news for one reason or another nearly every single day for a year.

Okay, enough with the conspiracy theory, back to to the posters. Both of them are as dark as the Knight, in tone as well as color. I’m thinking that Andrew Garfield’s Spider Man nee Peter Parker is going to be a lot darker than Tobey Maguire’s. They one line synopsis tells us as much: “Teenager Peter Parker grapples with both human problems and amazing super-human crises.”  Having seen Never Let Me Go, I’m thinking Garfield can handle the angst and he does have a nerdy appeal.

The poster for The Dark Knight Rises is ominous. That’s Bane taking center stage walking away from Batman’s disgarded cowl. The short synopsis “The terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, and pushes its hero Batman to the breaking point and beyond.” The new poster fits that to a tee. It’s not just fan boys geek-gasming over the thought of Bane (Tom Hardy) going toe to toe with the Bat.

Teenaged Spidey is no match in any way, for Bruce Wayne. Especially not a Bruce Wayne personified by Christian Bale. (I’m just saying if they are setting up a ‘dueling super heroes’ thing, they need to relax. It’s no contest.) Frankly, they’ll have to coexist anyway. The Amazing Spider Man hits for the 4th of July, where it will reign over the box office for about 2 ½ weeks before The Dark Knight Rises opens and flattens all competition on July 20th
