The UNICEF Snowflake Ball Kicks Off the Season of Giving!

The UNICEF Snowflake Ball Kicks Off NY the Season of Giving!

The annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball, is one of the most prestigious events on the New York social scene. Now in its seventh year, it helps raise funds for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Relief Fund, which provides support to children in poverty-stricken nations.  This year’s event was held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City Tuesday night.

Guests included Uma Thurman in a gorgeous green Atelier Versace column dress and Adrien Brody (Haters can hate but I think he's hot), both of whom have been affiliated with UNICEF for a long time. Sarah Jessica Parker was in frothy white Louis Vuitton (Matthew must have been home with the kids), Zoe Kravitz in black and white Chanel and really terrible bangs (What, no Penn Badgely? Trouble in paradise? Oh I crack myself up!). Angie Harmon looked STUNNING in a backless silver and gold Jean Fares Couture cut down to there.  Vera Farmiga is so pretty and she has a cute rock ‘n roll husband. I wish she’d stop dressing like a little old lady. Granted, this dress was by Naeem Khan, who also attended the event, but it still managed to make her look MUCH older and frumpier than she is. I understand the 40’s look she was going for and she did go all out with the Fred Leighton vintage jewelry…but still! Also in attendance, Gayle King, Kevin Jonas, Matt Lauer, Mark Ruffalo, Natasha Bedingfield, who also performed and Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who emceed the event.

Enjoy the pics!

Hugo Gets a Royal Command Performance in London!

Hugo Gets a Royal Command Performance in London!

The cast of Hugo, including Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sir Ben Kingsley, Helen McCrory, Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths made the trip, along with director Martin Scorsese, to London to screen the film for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, on Monday night, November 28.

Helen McCrory brought along her lovely husband, Damian Lewis. (They are one of my favorite couples. Is it odd that I have favorite couples?) Sir Ben was accompanied by his statuesque wife Daniella. Speaking of statuesque, when I first looked at that pic at the top of the post, I thought Chloe Moretz had to be standing on a box. No, Martin Scorsese is just that short.  Mr. Scorsese had his family with him, including wife Helen and their daughter Francesca, who “inspired” the movie. After his wife and daughter read the book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selznick, they both ‘begged’ him to film it, so that he would finally have made a movie his daughter could see. It was also Francesca’s idea for it to be filmed in 3D. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. It’s stunning.

Also at the after-party were Kate Hudson, (stick thin again after giving birth a mere two months ago), Rod Stewart and his latest family, some girl group called Little Mix (who looked a lot out of place), Brian May (I think it is so cool that he never cut his hair. Don’t ask me why) and a British tv star called Ben Fogle, who is very cute…oh and his wife. Enjoy the pics!

Give a Listen to The Killers “Cowboys Christmas Ball”!

Give a Listen to The Killers "Cowboys Christmas Ball"!

Merry Christmas to me, The Killers are back! After a three year hiatus, during which lead singer Brandon Flowers released his first (incredible) solo album, “Flamingo”, The Killers are going to back with a new album in 2012. To remind us of what we’ve been missing, however, they’ve released another Christmas single.

“The Cowboys Christmas Ball” is being released to coincide with World Aids Day with proceeds going towards the (RED) campaign which helps fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. You can listen to it here and even sing along with the posted lyrics, but you should still download it since it’s for such a good cause.

“The Cowboys’ Christmas” certainly is peppy and upbeat (compared to their 2010 Christmas single, “Boots”).  2011 is the fifth year in a row in which The Killers have released a Christmas single and “The Cowboy's Christmas Ball” will be available as part of an EP which will contain all their previous Christmas releases.

The band is currently working on their fourth studio album and will probably tour, including major festivals, next summer.

Spirit Awards Nominations Yield Surprises and Snubs

Spirit Awards Nominations Yield Surprises and Snubs

Kate Beckinsale and Anthony Mackie helped Film Independent  senior director Sean McManus announce the nominees for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards yesterday at The London in West Hollywood.

Not crazy about Kate’s  Tadashi Shoji  Spring 2012 “dress” (if you can classify it as such). It looked like she hacked off two-thirds of a Victorian undergarment. Sorry. I’m probably just still annoyed that Michael Fassbender’s name was left off of the list of the nominees for Best Lead Actor.  Seems like a very large gaffe considering that every time I read a review of Shame, it touts his bold and fearless performance and proclaims it the best of the year.  Apparently Film Independent disagrees. Of course, Fassy wasn’t the only one snubbed. Both George Clooney (for The Descendents) and Glenn Close (for Albert Nobbs) failed to garner a nod. Woody Allen and Midnight in Paris only managed nominations for Corey Stoll (who won a Gotham the other night) and cinematographer, but were left out of feature, director, and screenplay categories.  While I may end up disappointed that some of my favorites are not nominated, I kind of like that there can still be surprises in the increasingly predictable awards races.

Stay tuned folks, we’re just getting warmed up. The complete list of the Spirit Awards nominees can be found here

Gary Oldman and Charlize Theron Honored at Gotham Awards

IFP's Gotham Independent Film Awards were held at Cipriani Wall Street on November 28, 2011 in New York City. Gary Oldman and Charlize Theron were both given special awards for their contribution to independent films at the 21st annual event.

Edie Falco and Oliver Platt hosted the event. Falco credited the Independent Film Project (IFP), which is affiliated with Gotham, for giving her the opportunity to act.

British actress Felicity Jones earned the Breakthrough Award for Like Crazy, in which she played a British exchange student trying to maintain a long-distance relationship with her American boyfriend.

Daniel Craig Covers British GQ for the New Year!

Daniel Craig Covers British GQ for the New Year!

Daniel Craig, whose new film, David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens toward the end of December, is on the cover of the January 2012 issue of British GQ.  Good lord, those eyes!

Craig, certainly one of the most intelligent and compelling actors of his generation, and his costar Rooney Mara were on the cover of Entertainment Weekly last week and Empire last month. The publicity machine on this thing goes to 11. I am by no means complaining. Whenever we get news and pics of the notoriously publicity reticent Craig, I’m happy. This has been a big year for him, in terms of having his mug in the news.

He did publicity for last summer’s Cowboys and Aliens right after his super secret surprise stealth wedding to Rachel Weisz. Even though he walked red carpets from San Diego to London sans new bride, it’s what everyone wanted to talk about, naturally. (Both he and Weisz appeared on The Daily Show – for separate films- and Jon Stewart is the only chat show host to resist the urge to ask. The newly minted Daniel Craigs did no joint publicity for the turkey that reignited their spark, Dream House.) He gave a candid interview to Esquire, but at the time of the article, he and Weisz were only “dating” so that reporter got no dish either.

GQ got a little more about his newly married status, even if it was only that Craig once again said, “I’m not going to talk about it”, but in a different, more comprehensive way.

"We got away with it. We did it privately. And we've got a lot of people to thank for that. But that was the point. We did it for private reasons. Because we didn't want it f***ed up, because that would be sharing a secret. And the whole point is that it was a secret. A secret is a secret in my mind."

"I'm in love, I'm very happy. And that is as far as I'm prepared to go. Life is long, life goes wrong and I don't want to say something now that might be thrown back later. Ultimately, people are saying, 'Give it six months.' Well guess what? I'm not responding. Life is long and I am hopefully in this for the long run."

Ya know what, I believe him. Congrats to the happy couple. At least by the time he needs to make the rounds for Skyfall, the next James Bond film, they’ll have more than a year of marriage behind them. I’m sure another celebrity couple will have done something outrageous enough to take the heat off by then.    GQ hits the stands in Britain on 1st December.

Watch an International Trailer for Ice Age: Continental Drift

Watch an International Trailer for Ice Age: Continental Drift

How cute does this look?? This is the international trailer for the fourth installment of the Ice Age franchise, Ice Age Continental Drift. It plays more like a clip featuring Scrat but it’s adorable nonetheless. These films have only played on the periphery of my radar but everytime I see a trailer it makes me think I should see the movie. I’m a sucker for (good) animation.

Synopsis: Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

Ice Age: Continental Drift features the voices of Ray Romano as Manny, John Leguizamo as Sid, Denis Leary as Diego, Seann William Scott as Crash, Josh Peck as Eddie, Queen Latifah as Ellie, and new voices Jennifer Lopez, Wanda Sykes, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, Drake, Josh Gad, Alan Tudyk, Nick Frost and Joy Behar. It opens 6th July in the UK and July 13 in the US and Canada.
