United Nations Honors Angelina Jolie With Envoy Role!

United Nations Honors Angelina Jolie With Envoy Role!

After a decade of working tirelessly on behalf of refugees around the world, the beautiful and beguiling Angelina Jolie has been honored with a key role.  Jolie will now serve as special envoy  of High Commissioner Antonio Guterres.  Speaking to journalists in Geneva, spokesman Adrian Edwards, explained the role:

"she is expected to focus on large scale crises resulting in mass displacement of people, to undertake advocacy and represent UNHCR and Guterres at the diplomatic level"

These types of prestigious roles are normally awarded to former diplomats and retired politicians, but Jolie has clearly demonstrated herself as an expert on difficult and complex refugee issues and a compassionate champion of their needs.  Through her more than 40 field visits to countries around the world, she has become very familiar with the countries most in need and for long term lasting solutions for these situations.

It was over a decade ago that she took her first trip to Sierra Leone to witness first hand the sheer horror and  endless atrocities that refugees there had experienced.  Where a life works is daily survival.   In her book "Notes from my Travels" she articulates the strength and grace of people of have experienced so much hardship. From Sierra Leone, to the Congo, to Cambodia, Jolie worked tirelessly to better understand the regions and the complexity of the issues that they face. And, even despite being left stranded to fend for herself (After a Hollywood studio canceled the plane they had promised would pick her up in the Congo) she has never forgotten or stopped working to help improve the conditions of those most vulnerable

A remarkable woman on a remarkable journey to help make the lives of those most in need just a little easier.

Hats Off to Kate Winslet!

Hats Off to Kate Winslet!

As Titanic 3D sails  back into theaters , 15 years after its original release,  the heroine of the story reaches to new heights with the recent launch of  her book – Golden Hat- Talking Back to Autism" .

Winslet and a bevy of her famous friends have come together to support the award winning actresses' passion for raising funds and awareness  for Autism research.  Each of the stars who participated, donned a " golden hat" in a show of support for the project. The book is a collection of photographs of an illustrious group of stars including Bono, Julia Roberts, Leonardo Dicaprio,  Angelina Jolie and Oprah Winfrey all wearing the tattered "golden hat".

The book launched just a few weeks ago, just prior to April which is autism awareness month.  According to autismspeaks.org, 1 in 88 children (1 in 54 boys) are diagnosed with autism.  Its cause is still unknown as is its cure.

Check out Kate's site goldenhat.org to buy the book and find out more ways that you can help support the cause.

Adrien Brody and Other Celebs Get Ready to Rev Their Engines!

Adrien Brody and Other Celebs Get Ready to Rev Their Engines!

(insert obvious joke about exactly whose engine was revving here)

Yesterday was press day for the 36th annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race that will take place April 14 through the streets of Long Beach, California. The charity event is held every year in conjunction with the prestigious Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix, (an internationally known race that since 2008 has featured IndyCars). Drivers in past Pro/Celebrity races have included Patrick Dempsey, Keanu Reeves, Christian Slater and Adrien Brody (who returns this year. Race Day also happens to be his 39th birthday. Brody and Reeves just competed in the Kings of the Street race in Las Vegas last month. I know I digress. I like racing. We've talked about this.). Well known names from film, television, music and sports all receive on-the-track training to prepare for the race and will then get behind the wheels of identically prepared, race-ready Toyota Scion tCs to drive the historic 10-lap, 1.97-mile street circuit to benefit Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach and Children's Hospital of Orange County.

Toyota annually donates $5,000 to Racing for Kids on behalf of each participant and another $5,000 to the winning racer's charity of choice. Racing for Kids–a national nonprofit program benefiting children's hospitals throughout the country–was created as a way to connect these children with their favorite celebrities and race-car drivers. Toyota has donated more than $2 million to the Racing for Kids organization since 1991, on behalf of the race and its participants. (This report was prepared from the official press release. Forgive me but, $2mil since 1991? That’s it?!  C’mon Toyota, that’s chump change!)

LeAnn Rimes, whose husband Eddie Cibrian (who may be a douche-canoe but he's a gorgeous douche-canoe) happens to be driving in the race, will open the ceremonies on April 14 by singing the national anthem. Some of the other drivers participating in the race–which is the world's longest-running and most prestigious celebrity racing event–include actors Brody, Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy), Hill Harper and William Fichtner (last year’s winner), former UFC champion Cain Velasquez,  Mexican superstar Kate del Castillo, Jillian Barberie Reynolds, Adam Corolla, Bill Rancic and Rutledge Wood, the host of Top Gear USA.

In addition to Toyota's contributions, a $15,000 donation will be made in conjunction with the 15th-annual "People Pole Award." Sponsored by People magazine, the award honors the pole-position winner of the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race qualifying session on Friday, April 13.

Below are a few pics from yesterday’s Press Day, which is really just an excuse to post pics of Adrien Brody, (which will have to tide us over until we get more pics of Chris Hemsworth on the set of Rush in his firesuit).

Lionsgate and The Hunger Games Give Back! Details for Charity Auctions

Lionsgate and The Hunger Games Give Back! Details for Charity Auctions

As predicted, The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, is the biggest movie on the planet. It just completed its second weekend in release and was again on top of the leader board.

To celebrate raking in more dough than the GNP of many small countries, Lionsgate is giving back, sort of. They’re auctioning off a series of signed posters and Mockingjay pins as well as copies of the movie tie-in paperbacks. The posters, pins and books have been signed by Lawrence, Hemsworth, and Hutcherson  as well as Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks and Wes Bentley, depending on the item.

It’s hard for me to be cynical when the cause that will benefit from these auctions is such a good one. All proceeds from the auctions, including the $9.99 shipping and handling fee that the winner will pay, will go directly to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. (Lionsgate is responsible for shipping to the winners.)

The auctions begin today, April 2 and will end April 6. The winning bidders will receive the studio certified posters or pins and books with a signed letter verifying their authenticity.

Please click on the following links to view the auctions:

Kat McPhee Helps SMASH Malaria in Africa!

Kat McPhee Helps SMASH Malaria in Africa!

The bright young talented star of the NBC hit series SMASH Katharine McPhee is in Africa on a mission to help end the plight of Malaria. Her journey of hope includes a stop in Ghana and Burkino Faso where her Outreach program helped to build a school.

Katharine first became interested in the fight against Malaria and the NGO Malaria No More while participating in an Idol Gives Back special dedicated to helping the charity .  The disease is both preventable and treatable and kills one child every minute.  While in Africa, Katharine is distributing life saving mosquito nets (generously donated by Vestergaard Frandsen  Inc) and medication to the villages and communities struggling.

The infectious spirit of the African people and Katharine's passion for helping them are showcased in these pictures of Katharine participating  in a local Durbar ceremony (chief party including drumming and dramatic performances).

A beautiful star on a beautiful journey.

Photos: Gisele Bundchen Feeds Baby Elephants

Photos: Gisele Bundchen Feeds Baby Elephants

Gisele Bundchen visited some baby elephants in Africa at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary in January that were orphaned because of poachers. Are you listening Eric and Donald Jr. Trump? Oh that's right you weren't poaching you were hunting. Notice how she's feeding them (the elephants) instead of feeding them TO people? She says of the babies:

They explained to us that in some ways elephants are not that different from humans. When we are happy, cared for, and loved, we thrive and the same is true for elephants. I will never understand how someone could kill or harm an animal as beautiful and special as an elephant

Alec Baldwin is also speaking up for elephants pleading with people to not visit circuses who regularly use baby elephants. The beautiful creatures are usually taken from their moms and trained under some very horrific practices. I don't mean to get all PETA on you, but hurting an animal for our entertainment seems very wrong.
