Johnny Depp Live on Stage with Alice Cooper! One Night Only!

Johnny Depp Live on Stage with Alice Cooper! One Night Only!

Apparently it’s Johnny Depp Day around here. Warner Brothers has released some pics of the Dark Shadows LA Premiere after-party held Monday May 7 in LA. The pics feature Alice Cooper, who appears as himself in the movie, rocking out with the aforementioned Mr. Depp.  There’s also a brief (very brief – as in 15 seconds brief) clip of them performing “No More Mr. Nice Guy”.

Dark Shadows, the 70’s Gothic horror serial filtered through the mind of Tim Burton opens this Friday May 11. It stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins (and I still say he’s a mix of Edward Scissorhands and Max Schreck), Michelle Pfeiffer as Colins family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters/Josette Du Pres, Chloe Moretz  as Carolyn Stoddard and Gulliver McGrath as her cousin David Collins.  Oh, and Christopher Lee is in it too!

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton Bring Dark Shadows to LA

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton Bring Dark Shadows to LA

While the stars were colliding in New York, the cast of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows stepped out last night in Hollywood at Grauman’s Chinese Theater for a red carpet premiere. Burton was there, but his other half Helena Bonham Carter must have been home minding the kiddies. (I wonder how much time Burton spends on that hair. You will never convince me that’s an accident. It looks the same every time.) Johnny Depp looked very Johnny Depp like, maybe a little more orange. Alice Cooper looked embalmed. Michelle Pfeiffer looked effortlessly gorgeous.  A little more work was required, obviously for Eva Green and Bella Heathcote but the results were fab. By the way, Chloe Grace Moretz is only fifteen and works the red carpet not only better than starlets her own age but better than veterans Michelle Pfeiffer’s age.

There’s a pic below of Danny Elfman, if you’ve ever wondered about the man behind the scores for all of Tim Burton’s films (and former member of Oingo Boingo if you’re old enough to remember). There’s also a pic of three of the cast members of the original late 60’s-early 70’s tv show.  David Selby (who played Quentin Collins, the werewolf), Kathryn Lee Scott (Maggie Evans) and Lara Parker (Angelique – played by Eva Green in the movie).

Dark Shadows opens this Friday May 11. Enjoy the pics!

Meet The Wacky Collins Family: Behind the Scenes of Dark Shadows!

Meet The Wacky Collins Family: Behind the Scenes of Dark Shadows!

"They're creepy and they're kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They're all together ooky, The Addams Collins Family."

Earlier, while discussing Tim Burton’s other new film this summer, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I hinted that we’d have more on Dark Shadows.  Well, we do. We have some new images, courtesy of the new Entertainment Weekly (the one with Depp as Barnabas on the cover) as well as a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette with interviews of the cast and director Burton that provide an introduction to the oddball clan known as the Collins family.

“In 1752 the Collins family sails from Liverpool to start a new life in America. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas (Johnny Depp) is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy… until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). Angelique turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is freed and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harbouring their own dark secrets. Tim Burton directed this gothic vampire tale based on the cult TV series of the same name.”

In addition to Depp and Green, the cast fantastic cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloë Grace Moretz, Jonny Lee Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, Gulliver McGrath,  and of course, Helena Bonham Carter. There’s only one more week until Dark Shadows opens so expect to get a few more goodies between now and then.

Dark Shadows will be released in the US, Canada and the UK on May 11.

12 Days to Dark Shadows! Celebrate the Work of Tim Burton!

12 Days to Dark Shadows! Celebrate the Work of Tim Burton!

Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows opens in twelve days. Is it a gothic horror comedy or a comedy with elements of horror? American Werewolf in London suffered a similar identity crisis, at least in terms of how reviewers and a lot of audience members perceived it. (Me? I’ve never thought of it as anything other than a horror movie with a sense of humor. I think Dark Shadows will not be anywhere near as intense as American Werewolf and that there may be equal measures of both campy humor and horror.

In any case, Warner Brothers is releasing a Tim Burton dvd boxed set containing 7 titles this Tuesday, May 1. (Remember these may not what you consider to be his “best”, but they are all WB films:

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns, Mars Attacks!, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The set also includes a hard-cover book.  To celebrate the release of this boxed set, our friends at Hey U Guys have shared some behind the scenes images (You can see their complete gallery at the link). Of the films listed above, only Beetlejuice (a personal favorite) and Mars Attacks!  are not represented.  Some other favorites make up for it, like Edward Scissorhands (I cannot believe it’s been 22 years since its release) and Ed Wood among them.

13 Fang-tastic New Stills from Dark Shadows!

13 Fang-tastic New Stills from Dark Shadows!

Two more weeks! To celebrate the countdown to the May 11 release, we have a lucky 13 brand new stills just dropped by Warner Brothers for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows!

I’m really looking forward to this, as you have probably gathered by now. I’m still not sure why the marketing wizards seem to be leaning so heavily on the  campy humor, because what I’m hearing is that the movie does contain a fair amount of horror, which is befitting a movie where the central character is a vampire. (Although a movie that also transplanted a vampire to the modern world and played it strictly for laughs, Love at First Bite, is among my favorite guilty pleasures.) Without getting spoilery, I can say that the film culminates in a “bloody battle”. I’d really hate it if Burton had drained the blood out of vampire Barnabas Collins. As I have yet to see the entire finished product I can only guess that if the balancing act is successful, it will be due in large part to screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, another Burton collaboration and other genre mash-up.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Johnny Depp is of course Barnabas Collins (and I still say he’s a mix of Edward Scissorhands and Max Schreck). The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath.  Dark Shadows opens in the US and the UK on May 11.

Go Behind the Scenes of Dark Shadows with Michelle Pfeiffer!

Go Behind the Scenes of Dark Shadows with Michelle Pfeiffer!

Michelle Pfeiffer took W Magazine behind the scenes of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows recently. She told the mag that it “was the most fun {she’d} ever had preparing for a film”.

Pfeiffer also told W how much of a fan she’d been of the original 1960’2 television series, Dark Shadows. ““I was one of those kids who raced home from school to catch it,” Pfeiffer says. “The show was weird, scary, and kind of erotic. It had everything.”

In Burton’s gothic-meets-camp version, Pfeiffer plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (played by Joan Bennett in the original). Burton has, of course, directed Pfeiffer before, having worked together on Batman Returns. Pfeiffer played Catwoman/Selina Kyle in that 1992 film (which is the same role Anne Hathaway takes in this Summer’s The Dark Knight Rises). My favorite part of that movie was Selina Kyle coming into her apartment every night with “Hi Honey I’m home, Oh that’s right, I’m not married” and hearing her inflection change as she goes deeper into the dark side.

We have a couple of behind-the-scenes stills from the magazine as well as a new official still released by Warner Brothers.  Dark Shadows opens May 11th everywhere.

Warner Brothers Ready to Rake It In This Summer

Warner Brothers Ready to Rake It In This Summer

Warner Brothers has sent us their schedule of releases for the next few months, looking forward to a summer of fun at the box office. Considering that they’ve got four of the most highly anticipated movies of the year on their slate, they should be having a lot of fun.

Starting in just four weeks with Dark Shadows and Johnny Depp, they then roll through June to Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise, and hope that Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer become the boys of summer in Magic Mike. The big gun in the arsenal is of course The Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in July.  After that, just for laughs, there’s the Campaign in August with Will Ferrell and Zach Galiafinakis.

DARK SHADOWS (Gothic Comedy) May 11*

CHERNOBYL DIARIES (Horror Thriller) May 25

ROCK OF AGES (Rock Musical) June 15 *

MAGIC MIKE (Dramatic Comedy) June 29

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (Action Thriller) July 20*

THE CAMPAIGN (Comedy) August 10

THE APPARITION (Supernatural Thriller) August 24

No One Talks Like Barnabas Collins Anymore! UK Trailer for Dark Shadows!

No One Talks Like Barnabas Collins Anymore! UK Trailer for Dark Shadows!

I know, I know, I’ve told you I’m excited for The Avengers and Prometheus and The Dark Knight  Rises (among others), I’ve even told you I’m excited about Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, but let me just say it again. I’m really really excited about Dark Shadows!

We have a new UK trailer to share (thanks to our friends HeyUGuys), and while it does seem to emphasize the comedy, everything I’m reading leads me to believe that Burton has found the balance I’d hoped for. I’m not sure why the marketing campaign seems to be leaning so heavily on the humor, but apparently the movie is in fact a good mix of comedy and horror. The film culminates in a “bloody battle”. I don’t want to get too spoilery, but that sounds about right. I’d really hate it if Burton had drained the blood vampire Barnabas Collins. I think  a lot of the credit will eventually go to writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, another Burton collaboration.

Johnny Depp is of course Barnabas Collins (and I still say he’s a mix of Edward Scissorhands and Max Schreck) and he looks like he’s having a blast. The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America.
