Sean Penn and His Blazing Tommy Gun Have a Message For You

Sean Penn and His Blazing Tommy Gun Have a Message For You

“You don’t wanna empty yer pockets for Haiti? Oh yeah? Well eat LEAD fatcats!”

That’s not really the message Penn is sending. That’s a still from Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad in which Penn plays kingpin Mickey Cohen.  Buzz is really starting to build on the Warner Brothers film after the trailer dropped a couple of weeks ago. I think I’ve mentioned how much I’m looking forward to it.

The film, about an elite LAPD unit tasked with taking down mobster Cohen in the brutal LA of the late 40’s early 50’s, has an amazing cast, featuring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi and Anthony Mackie. We have some new images courtesy of our friends at HeyUGuys including new looks (actually they appear to be screen shots from the trailer) at ultimate moll Emma Stone, Brolin and Gosling.

I’ve watched the trailer a few times since it first arrived. There are still things I’m not crazy about but there is enough there to love, not least of which is this cast, that I’m still in. Gangster Squad raids theaters on September 7 in the US (a mere week after another take on the gangster mythos, Lawless.)

The Guns, The Gadgets, The Cars, The Look of Men in Black III

Remember Kids: Do Not Flush Your Goldfish! Two New TV Spots for Men In Black III!

We have a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black III, the three-quel you never knew you wanted but are willing to give it a look anyway. Or is that just me?

Seriously, I don’t think we’re going to be breaking any drastically new ground here but it does look like fun. It’s probably worth the price of a matinee ticket at any rate, as I’ve said, for Josh Brolin’s Tommy Lee Jones impression alone. (Brolin has really grown on me over the past few years. See him on a chat show and he’s a hoot.)

The video we have today focuses on the production design and that, regardless of the movie that surrounds it, does seem very impressive.  I may have to see this movie just to find out why they have those cool unicycle things in 1969 but not in 2012.

In Men in Black III, Agents J (Smith) and K (Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake,Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discoversthat there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind. The film is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. The screenplay is written by Etan Cohen, based on the Malibu Comic by Lowell Cunningham. The producers are Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, and the executive producers are Steven Spielberg and G. Mac Brown.

Men in Black III with Smith, Jones and Brolin as well as Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and Michael Stuhlbarg, with cameos by Tim Burton, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber opens May 25 in the US, the UK and most of the known universe. Oh and one more reason to see this movie, cats and kittens? THE FIRST TRAILER FOR SKYFALL WILL BE SHOWN AHEAD OF IT!

Trailer for The Gangster Squad Arrives with Tommy Guns Blazing!

Trailer for The Gangster Squad Arrives with Tommy Guns Blazing!

I have been waiting for the trailer for Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad since we brought you the first set pic last year. Well, today we finally have it and I don’t know what to make of it. I like it, but I think it’ll take a few more viewings before I love it. It appears the film is part action film, part period drama, as compared to a straight noir like LA Confidential (which I must admit I was hoping for.) It might have been wrong for me to assume that and there’s nothing inherently wrong with taking the genre in a new direction.  One thing seems clear to me, this is going to be an actor’s showcase packed with powerhouse performances from Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone (smoldering!), with Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen leading the way.

The biggest question mark for me is why did whoever cut this thing use Jay-Z underneath it? Love Jay-Z, but he doesn’t scream LA at all, let alone LA in the lat 40's-early 50's. (IMHO that’s trying way too hard to court the almighty 18-25 yr old male demographic.)  Oh well. I’m not giving up on this by any stretch of the imagination. Bring it on!

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

Under the direction of Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”), “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. The film stars Oscar® nominees Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “True Grit”) and Ryan Gosling (“Half Nelson,” “Blue Valentine”) as the LAPD’s Sgt. John O’Mara and Jerry Wooters; Academy Award® winner Sean Penn (“Milk,” “Mystic River”) as real-life mobster Mickey Cohen; and Emma Stone as Grace Faraday, Cohen’s moll and the object of Wooters’ attention.

The amazing cast also includes Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, Mireille Enos, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Robert Patrick, Troy Garity and Holt McCallany.  The Gangster Squad will be released in the US on October 19 and in the UK on 9th November.

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

It’s time for another super exciting posters post! First up, Men in Black III which stars Will Smith as J and Tommy Lee Jones as K with Josh Brolin along  for the ride as a younger version of same.

We’ve seen some pretty impressive stuff from the the Barry Sonnenfeld directed threequel, including the superfantastic  futuristic-but-used-in-the-psychedelic-60’s flying unicycles that are pictured on this brand new poster.

In the third installment of the series Agents J (Smith) and K (Jones) are back… in time.

Men in Black III opens May 25 in the US, Canada and the UK.

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

Next up, a new poster for The Words, the film we told you about back in January with Bradley Cooper,  Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons and Olivia Wilde.

The Words revolves around Rory (Cooper), a struggling writer who claims another man’s long lost work as his own. Caught up in a dangerous conspiracy, the price he must pay is more than he could have ever imagined.

The trouble starts when Dora, Rory’s wife (Saldana) comes across “a valise” in an antiques shop. The valise contains a “lost masterwork” of a  “Hemingway-esque writer” played by Jeremy Irons.

The Words is both written and directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal. The supporting cast includes Ben Barnes, John Hannah, J.K. Simmons, Michael McKean, Zeljko Ivanek and Ron Rifkin. We now have a US release date of September 21. Still no word on the UK.

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

After we brought you thirteen new character posters the other day, here’s a new one-sheet for Simon West’s The Expendables 2 with Sylvester Stallone front and center. I’ve seen the trailer twice this weekend on the big screen. This one will be just as much fun as the first!

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way….

The Expendables 2 opens August 17 in the US and the UK.

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

Here’s a first poster for House at the End of the Street with Jennifer Lawrence and Elisabeth Shue. The doesn’t do much except make sure you know that Jennifer Lawrence is in the movie.  I saw this trailer on the big screen this weekend as well. Still not impressed.

Newly divorced Sarah and her daughter Elissa find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret. They find themselves living next door to a house where a young girl murdered her parents…

House At The End Of The Street starring Lawrence, Shue, Max Thieriot  (Chloe,My Soul to Take) and Gil Bellows, moves into theaters September 21.

A Saturday Pot Full of Pretty Posters!

And finally, we have an international poster for Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise as ‘rock God’ Stacee Jaxx. All of the other characters are present and accounted for as well. Personally, I think Alec Baldwin alone will be worth the price of a ticket.

Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and based on the Tony Award nominated Broadway musical, Rock of Ages is set in 1987and follows a fresh off the bus sweet-young-thing who comes to LA with stars in her eyes and big '80s hair (Julianne Hough). There, she meets a nice guy with ambitions of his own (Diego Boneta). When they meet, it's love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges as they are seduced by the sex-drugs and rocknroll way of life personified by superstar Stacee Jaxx (Cruise), who meanwhile is falling for music journalist Malin Akerman.

The cast features Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige and  Catherine Zeta Jones. It also features Will Forte, Bryan Cranston and Constantine Maroulis. Rock of Ages opens June 15 in the Us and the UK.

What Do You Get When You Cross a 50′s Classic with a Pitbull?

What Do You Get When You Cross a 60's Classic with a Pitbull?

I’m going to warn you right now, this is jaw-droppingly bad. Now, we might have expected something from Will Smith, as he’s been known to do a theme song for a movie in which he’s also the star, but this time, instead of Smith, some rapper called Pitbull has been given the responsibility of providing the song for Men in Black III.

Pitbull, whose presence in this video makes me want to hurt someone (perhaps there are subliminal messages?), has inexplicably dropped an awesomely bad rap on top of Mickey and Sylvia’s “Love is Strange” and called the mess “Back in Time.”  Has Pit (or does he prefer Bull?) never heard of that chestnut from the 80’s actually called “Back in Time?”  How much more sense would it have made to sample THAT song? (That song plays in my head whenever I watch a trailer for Men in Black III already.)  Oh and by the way, that bottle he pours from?  That's Voli Vodka, for which Pitbull is a spokesperson and in which he holds a majority equity stake. (And the Bond producers are getting sh*t for letting Heineken help pay for their film?)

I know what you’re thinking, “if it’s so bad, why are you telling us about it?”  Merely as a public service, my friends. If this movie, which opens in the US and the UK on May 25, becomes the blockbuster summer hit that the producers hope that it will be, you will be assaulted by this song whenever you turn on the radio. Familarize yourselves with it so that whenever you hear the opening strains you can turn the dial or just shut the thing off.

You’re welcome.

It’s Raining Men in Black III Pics!

It's Raining Men in Black III Pics!

We have more new images from Barry Sonenfeld’s Men in Black III. We get a look at Emma Thompson as the “current”  Agent O and Alice Eve, as the younger Agent O. We also have new looks at Jemaine Clement and Nicole Scherzinger as Boris and Lilly and a first look at Michael Stuhlbarg as someone called Griffin.

Even better, we also have, courtesy of EW (via Dreadcentral) some up close and personal looks at a few of the aliens created by special effects legend Rick Baker.

Mac Brown.

I saw the 2nd theatrical trailer again yesterday, this time on the big screen (in front of Wrath of the Titans) and not only does this look like fun, but Brolin’s spot-on Tommy Lee Jones impression alone might be worth the price of admission.

Men in Black III is written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) with music once again by Danny Elfman and stars in addition to Smith, Jones, Brolin, Thompson, Eve, Scherzinger, Stuhlbarg, Clement, Bill Hader and…Lady Gaga.  It opens in the US and the UK on May 25.

Lloyd Dobler vs Chev Chelios in Another Very Cool Posters Post!

Lloyd Dobler vs Chev Chelios in Another Very Cool Posters Post!

What is she talking about you may ask? We have new posters for The Raven and Safe, both of which will be released on April 27 in the US, thus setting up that long awaited grudge match between Lloyd Dobler  (John Cusack – Say Anything)and Chev Chelios (Jason “The Stath” Statham – Crank). We also have posters for Men in Black III and Intruders.

Above is that new UK banner for Safe with Jason Statham and his big gun. (No, that never gets old)

A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change…until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed.

But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action…and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a “counter.” He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for.

Realizing he’s the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city’s brutal underworld to save an innocent girl’s life…and perhaps even redeem his own.

Also starring Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke and Anson Mount, Safe will be cracked in theaters April 27 in the US and 4th May in the UK.

Lloyd Dobler vs Chev Chelios in Another Very Cool Posters Post!

We have three new banners from the viral FB site for Men in Black III.

In Men in Black™ 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Men in Black III stars Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alice Eve, Emma Thompson, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and apparently Lady Gaga has a cameo. It opens May 25 in the US, Canada and the UK.

Lloyd Dobler vs Chev Chelios in Another Very Cool Posters Post!

Speaking of Alice Eve, she appears as Edgar Allan Poe’s (John Cusack) love interest in The Raven, for which we have not one, but two new posters.

In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta,Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster). When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

The Raven is open in the UK now. Again, it flies into US theaters on  April 27th.

Lloyd Dobler vs Chev Chelios in Another Very Cool Posters Post!

Now this is an interesting poster, it’s a “comic” interpretation of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Intruders.

Starring Clive Owen and Carice van Houten (soon to be seen in season 2 of Game of Thrones), Intruders deals with ‘two children living in different countries are visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.’

It finally gets a limited US release March 30.
