New Year, New Movie: We (very briefly) told you about Pawel Pawlikowski‘s The Woman in the Fifth way back in September when it played TIFF, but we’ve heard nothing since. Yesterday a first image emerged and now today we have another image from the film as well as a UK trailer. It stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Ethan Hawke as lovers who get entangled in a mysterious twist. (I hope so, otherwise I'm getting a Fatal Attraction vibe here. On the other hand, how refreshing that two adults over 40 are shown having a hot love affair!)

The official synopsis: An American writer moves to Paris to be closer to his daughter and finds himself falling immediately on hard times. Befriended by a French Arab who offers him a job, Tom finds himself employed as a security agent as he struggles to write his second novel and see his daughter. Meanwhile, his personal life takes a turn as he becomes involved with a beguiling woman.

Hawke, whom I have liked since Explorers, hasn’t been seen since 2010′s Daybreakers, but also has the horror film Sinister and Total Recall on tap for 2012. The Woman in the Fifth also stars Joanna Kulig and Samir Guesmi and has a UK release date of 17th February but no US date at this time. We’ll keep you posted. I should have known, since there was too much activity surrounding Bel Ami, after such a long period of nothing, that a trailer was coming soon! Bel Ami is the latest adaptation of the novel by Guy de Maupassant, starring Robert Pattinson as Georges Duroy, a man of modest means who basically sleeps his way through Parisian high-society during the period known as La Belle Epoque. The women in question are Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci. The costumes and production design are enough to get me into the theater. An international trailer has just dropped today and you can watch it below thanks to MSN.

Bel Ami, directed by Nick Oremerod and Declan Donnellan has been filmed seven times before, dating all the way back to 1919 (although four of those were for French television.) The film also stars Colm Meaney, Holliday Grainger, Philip Glenister, Pip Torrens and James Lance. It finally has a couple of release dates, all in Europe: 2^nd March in the UK, 27^th June in France. Nothing for the US…yet.

How weird is that? I was just thinking the other day that it had been quite some time since we’d heard anything about Bel Ami, the Nick Oremerod and Declan Donnellan period drama based on a novel by Guy de Maupassant with Robert Pattinson. It’s been since August actually, that we had anything new to bring you. Considering the world-wide megahit that Twilight: Breaking Dawn – part 1 has become (shocker, huh?), you’d think the producers of Bel Ami would want to get a piece of that publicity. Well, today we have some new pics of Pattinson on set in costume and some stills. Also pictured are Holliday Grainger, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Well, the movie looks lush anyway. Pattinson stars as Georges Duroy, a man of modest means who basically sleeps his way through Parisian high-society during the period known as La Belle Epoque (the age so wistfully described by Marion Cotilliard in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.) The women in question are Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci, so hopefully this one will draw a more mature audience than his sparkly vampire role. Although, who am I kidding? Those emo-vamp flicks didn't make bazillions from the babysitting cash of tweens alone. Therefore, this one has a huge built-in audience. The set design and the costumes are enough to get me into the theater.

Lasse Hallstrom’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen with Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt is a film I first heard about when it played the Toronto International Film Festival. I’d heard of it and that’s about it. For some reason I thought it was some dry political drama. Well, apparently I wasn’t paying attention, because boy was I wrong.  Take a look at this first trailer. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen looks completely charming.

A fisheries expert  (McGregor) is approached by a consultant (Blunt) to help realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert and embarks on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

What that synopsis can’t tell you about is the obvious chemistry between Blunt and McGregor and the gentle humor with which this film is infused. 

Director Hallstrom’s previous films include My Life as a Dog, Once Around (Holly Hunter was brilliant, no matter what anyone thought of the rest of the film), Something to Talk About, Cider House Rules and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, among many others, but this should give you an idea of what to expect. He handles personal foibles and the vicissitudes of life with a deft touch.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen also stars Kristin Scott Thomas (lighter than she’s been in years) and Amr Waked. It will be released March 2 in the US and 9th March in the UK. I don’t expect either  of those to be wide, so you’ll  have to look for it, I’m sure.

One of my favourite actresses Kate Winslet poses with Colin Firth (who I must say is growing on me in recent days) and it looks to be a mutual admiration society of these two.  Colin Firth won for Leading Actor in A Single Man.

Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker cleaned up at the BAFTAs with six wins including Best Picture and Director beating out ex-husband James Cameron for Avatar (which btw I saw it this weekend for the first time and it is as great as everyone says it is). Cameron has been very vocal about his support for his ex-wife which is fabulous. This, of course only adds to the Oscar buzz considering she has won a Producers Guild Award, Critics Choice Award, Writers Guild Award and a Director’s Guild Award in various categories for The Hurt Locker.
