Hysteria is romantic comedy based on the truth of how Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy) devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science. Yes, you read that right, the words ‘romantic comedy’ and vibrator in the same sentence. Is this a sign of how far we've come as a society or another sign of the impending apocalypse? (Of course, it's been made with an exceedingly well-bred cast, so there's not even a hint of salaciousness anywhere to be found.)

The film is centered on the invention of the vibrator in Victorian-era England. Dancy and Jonathan Pryce star as doctors in London treating cases of ‘hysteria’, a condition said to be characterized at the time by a woman’s irritability, anger or unexplained tears. Dancy’s character and his best friend, portrayed by (an almost unrecognizable- plastic surgery gone wrong) Rupert Everett, experiment with a new electrical device for treatment of the ailment. Maggie Gyllenhaal portrays the daughter of Pryce’s character. Gyllenhaal looks like she’s having a blast.

The rest of the cast includes Felicity Jones, Anna Chancellor, Ashley Jensen and Tobias Menzies. Hysteria was a hit at TIFF and a number of other festivals last year and will open in the US on May 18. Enjoy the pics and the posters, most of which are in German. Zac Posen celebrated the launch of his Zac Posen For Target collection yesterday in New York where Claire Danes, Selma Blair and Parker Posey wore outfits which retail for $70, $80 and $60 respectively.  Doesn’t it make a lot of sense to make outfits and price them to appeal to the masses as opposed to ‘designer’ prices that fewer can afford?

Maggie Gyllenhaal poses with Jeff Bridges at last night’s ARP the Magazine‘s the Ninth Annual Movies for Grownup Awards held in Beverly Hills where she presented Jeff with the best actor award:

“[During filming], you had everyone come in your trailer and you had vodka and I wasn’t used to that, but I had an almost 2-year-old and I was up for it. And I remember in the end it dwindled down [to a few people] and you put your arm around Scott [Cooper, the director] and said, ‘This is our leader, man, this is our leader.’ And I wasn’t sure, but I went with you because you said that and you said that with all your heart … And I know something about his heart, and he deserves every award that you guys could come up with to give him.”

Robert DeNiro took home a Lifetime Achievement Honour.

It’s great to see that the stars keep giving to raise money for the devastating earthquake in Haiti.  Last night stars gathered for a Radiohead charity concert in Los Angeles to raise money for OXFAM.org.

George Clooney’s two-hour Hope For Haiti benefit raise over $57 Million but that is expected to rise given the songs performed are available through iTunes.  The Canadian Hope For Haiti benefit raised $16 Million.
