Nicole Kidman Channels Ann-Margret in Poster for Paperboy!

Nicole Kidman Channels Ann-Margret in Poster for Paperboy!

It’s not me, right? Nicole Kidman looks like Ann Margaret circa Kitten with a Whip or Viva Las Vegas. I'm thinking the curl to Zac Efron’s lip says he thinks so too. Seriously though, I absolutely love the retro 70’s vibe (befitting the story) this first poster for The Paperboy is giving off.

The Paperboy is based on a 1995 sexual thriller by Pete Dexter (“Paris Trout”) and Dexter developed the film over the course of ten years with Pedro Almodovar, who is one of the producers. The film is directed by Lee Daniels in his follow-up to 2009’s Precious. He tabled his much talked about MLK biopic, for which he’d tapped David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Help, MI-5) to star, in order to tackle The Paperboy.

Brief synopsis: An idealistic reporter for the Miami Times returns to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving the murder of a local sheriff. He’s eventually helped by his younger brother, Jack (Zac Efron) as they investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a death row inmate (John Cusack). Matthew McConaughey plays Ward James, who teams with another reporter (Oyelowo as Yardley). During the course of the investigation, Jack falls for the woman (Kidman) whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.

The Paperboy stars Oyelowo, McConaughey, Cusack, Kidman, Efron and Scott Glenn. Millennium/Nu Image picked it up for distribution during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. No release dates are yet known, but if they’re giving us a poster then we should have a date soon, probably in time for Cannes 2012. (I hope so, Nicole Kidman needs to make us forget Trespass…like pronto.)

First Look at Matthew McConaughey and a Pole…er…in Magic Mike

First Look at Matthew McConaughey and a Pole...er...in Magic Mike

Here’s Matthew “I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt” McConaughey just back from a USO tour of the Middle East…yeah right. No, it’s your first look at Steven Soderbergh’s stripper movie, Magic Mike. That’s Matty in the hat with the erm…staff…I mean wand…I mean baton…yeah that’s it. And of course that’s Channing Tatum-tot in the front right, returning to his roots (since he started as an ‘exotic’ dancer before hitting the big time in the movies. He’s also one of the producers of the film). Also pictured is Joe Manganiello left rear.

The official synopsis:

Set in the world of male strippers, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum (Dear John, Step Up) in a story inspired by his real life. The film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

Magic Mike also stars Matt Boemer, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Olivia Munn (taking Jessica Biel’s hand-me-downs) and Riley Keough and hits theaters in the US on June 29th  (the same day as Tatum’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation).

I'm really looking forward to Red Tails. A crew of African American pilots, the "Tuskegee Airmen", having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard. The aerial shots look amazing. The film opens January 20 in the US.

Last, but not least, we have a great new image from Disney/Pixar's Brave, featuring Lord MacGuffin, who will be voiced by Kevin McKidd. Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, Brave features Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right. It's out June 22.

Butler, Worthington, McConaughey, Oh My!

Butler, Worthington, McConaughey, Oh My!

For weeks we've been hearing that Sam Worthington has been in talks to join Gerard Butler in Antoine Fuqua's Hunter Killer, about an untested submarine commander who teams with Navy seals to rescue the kidnapped Russian President. But now we have word that Butler and Worthington may also team up with Matthew McConaughey for another project, Simon West's Thunder Run. Both of these projects have a complicated history.

Back in November of 2010, it was announced that Fuqua and Butler would make an adaptation of a sci-fi comic book, After Burn. The duo were also in talks to make Consent to Kill, based on a novel by Vince Flynn. Nothing has come of either of those and they seem to be dead in the water. Now we have confirmation of Butler's participation in Hunter Killer from its distributor, Relativity Media. (I've been loathe to talk about this because I'm currently pissed at Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh for the whole Machine Gun Preacher debacle. But I digress)

So, hot on the heels of that announcement, we have confirmation (after the initial nebulous reports) that Butler and Worthington will, in fact, make Thunder Run, an adaptation of the nonfiction book, "Thunder Run-The Armored Strike to Capture Baghad", by Pulitzer Prize winning correspondent David Zucchino. They will be joined by Matthew McConaughey. This film will not only be in 3D, but entirely CGI, using the same process as James Cameron's Avatar.  (So Worthington should be fine.) Color me skeptical. A completely CGI war movie starring three of the hottest male actors all at the top of their game who will be rendered unrecognizable. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The trio's work will consist mostly of voicework but there will be green-screen aspects as well." I'm reserving judgment for now.

Killer Poster for Killer Joe!

Killer Poster for Killer Joe!

Check out this poster for William Freidkin’s Killer Joe. They’ve covered up Matthew McConaughey’s cerulean blue eyes (and he looks a little like Woody Harrelson), which is a shame, but they are very visible in the clip that we showed you last month (and in the pics below). Meanwhile, Emile Hirsch looks appropriately troubled by whatever plot he’s set in motion. I know it’s getting confusing with all of the “Killers” out there. There’s Kill ListKiller Elite, Texas Killing Fields and Killer Joe all coming to a theater near you very soon. (One’s a scary Brit crime drama, one has The Stath and Clive Owen’s ‘tache, one reminds me that it’s not the Academy Award winning movie about the Khmer Rouge because it has Texas in the title and one of them has McConaughey. See? Simple.)

When a debt puts a young man’s life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance. Matthew McConaughey plays the hitman and I see the the same icy cool that I saw in McConaughey’s Buddy Deeds from John Sayles’ Lone Star, with a touch more malice. That’s what that East Texas twang was made for. Emile Hirsch (Milk, Into the Wild, Alpha Dog) plays the young man, Chris Smith. Written by Tracy Letts (Bug), based on his off-Broadway play of the same name, cinematography is by the great Caleb Deschanel (Dream House, The Passion of the Christ, The Patriot),the cast also includes Juno Temple, Gina Gershon and Thomas Haden Church.

Killer Joe Screens at the Venice Film Festival on September 8 and at TIFF on September 11. Other release dates are still unknown and we don’t yet have a trailer. We’ll keep you posted.
