There will soon be not one, but two films about iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. One, screenwriter Sacha Gervasi’s (Henry’s Crime, The Terminal) directorial debut, Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho is still in the casting stages. In fact it was just announced today that Jessica Biel had just been signed to join Sir Anthondy Hopkins as Hitchcock, Helen Mirren as his wife Alma, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins. Biel will play actress Vera Miles.
The other is called The Girl with Toby Jones as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as his muse, Tippi Hedren. This one is a drama for the BBC and focuses on the director’s relationship with Hedren, the star of The Birds and Marnie (and the mother of Melanie Griffith). The title refers to what Hitchcock called all of his leading ladies.
The Daily Mail (via Cinemateaser) has given us a first look at Jones and Miller in the telefilm directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) from a script by Gwyneth Hughes (Miss Austen Regrets). To say that he was obsessed with Hedren is putting it mildly. In an interview the actress gave to The Daily Mail she revealed,
"I admired Hitch tremendously for his great talent and still do. Yet, at the same time, I loathed him for his off-set behaviour and the way he came on to me sexually. He was a great director – and he destroyed it all by his behaviour when he got me alone."
I love a good “behind-the-scenes” of moviemaking tale. There's plenty of scandal to go around in this case. I’m sure there will be plenty in Gervasi’s project. Janet Leigh, whose career was made by Psycho, was another in a series of gorgeous blondes cast by Hitchcock in an effort to replace Grace Kelly (Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief), but Jarrold’s telefilm will be first and Hitchcock’s fascination with Hedren is more well-documented.
Thanks to the IndieWire, we have a photo of the real Hitch and Hedren for comparison.
