The Following Has Attracted James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon to Fox!

The Following Has Attracted James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon to Fox!

Back in February we alerted you to the possibility that James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon might actually find their way to your television sets this year and apparently it is happening. Fox has picked up Kevin Williamson’s series, The Following, which centers on a diabolical serial killer (Purefoy) who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and the ex-FBI agent (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it.  They’ve got an order for a season consisting of fifteen episodes and it has been added to the Fox mid-season line-up. (It will take over House's vacated Monday slot that will be filled in the Fall by Mob Doctor.)

Here is a nearly four minute trailer for the show that will also star Natalie Zea (Justified –wait does that mean no Wynona Hawkins next season??), Maggie Grace (Taken, Lockout) and Shawn Ashmore (Frozen).  Judging from what I see here, I detect a strong Silence of the Lambs vibe, with Purefoy’s Joe Carroll standing in for Hannibal Lector and Bacon’s Ryan Hardy an older but wiser Clarice Starling. This is not necessarily a bad thing.  I wonder why, given the films they do transmute to television, why it’s taken so long to produce a form of the Thomas Harris book or Jonathan Demme film.  (Williamson is the creator and sole credited writer at this point and it’s not actually a version of Silence of the Lambs, but it does have some distinct similiarities.  Check the trailer and see if you agree.)

Again, I’m not dissing The Following when I make that comparison. I’m in. I’m a Purefoy fan and I can’t wait to see how this plays out in primetime and on a regular broadcast channel.

Fantastic Trailer #3 for HBO’s The Newsroom!

Fantastic Trailer #3 for HBO's The Newsroom!

Okay, now this is what I’m talkin’ about! This is television baby! And it’s television about television. This is The Newsroom and not since Aaron Sorkin himself brought us Sports Night have we had such an incisive, behind-the-scenes look at a slice of what gets beamed into our homes on a daily basis.

I’ve said before that to me it seems obvious Sorkin’s influences here were both Paddy Chayefsky’s script for Network and James L. Brooks’ Broadcast News. It seems more apparent with every new bit of footage we see.

Today we have a third trailer. Basically it’s more of the same, which means more of Sorkin’s sharp, witty, gifted dialogue as well as fine acting from an exceptional cast. (David Krumholtz as the psychiatrist? I love it!) This seems like the Jeff Daniels role that finally makes us forget Dumb & Dumber (Despite many, many fine performances in between, it was always there hanging over his head.) I can’t wait to see more of the dynamic between his Will McAvoy and Emily Mortimer’s Mackenzie MacHale , his producer with the pretentious name. They have dropped quite a few hints that there is a history between Will and Mackenzie of a personal nature. Battling exes perhaps?

If the two previous trailers haven’t hooked you, I’m not sure this one will, but give it a look anyway.

The Newsroom premieres on HBO on Sunday June 24.

More Snow White and the Huntsman Goodies!

More Snow White and the Huntsman Goodies!

Hot off of last night’s World Premiere of Snow White and the Huntsman, Universal has not only dropped a big bunch of new images, but also some new clips and videos for your perusal and enjoyment!

“The Huntsman Gets into a Bar Fight”:

This one is called “William Joins Finn and his Riders”. Of course, we don’t really know who Finn is. (He does appear to be one of the Queen’s men.) But this does give us a look at Prince William. He has been entirely too absent in all of the stuff we’ve been given thus far. Makes me wonder just how important a role the Prince plays in this story.

So, let’s hear from Sam Claflin and his thoughts on William:

We’ll be back with more. We’ll hear from the “dwarves” next!  Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth opens June 1!

Christopher Meloni Can Bite Me

Christopher Meloni IS The Authority in True Blood Season 5

Christopher Meloni IS The Authority in True Blood Season 5

It's totally inappropriate, but I hear South Park's Cartman when I type "authority".

Let me begin by saying, I do not watch HBO’s True Blood. I’ve seen one episode from season 1 and that’s it. It didn’t hook me and I had other things to watch. Having said that, now that the show is about to begin its fifth season, they’ve gone and done something that has just about convinced me to rethink my position:  They’ve added Christopher Meloni to the cast.

Christopher Meloni, who spent twelve seasons as the volatile and smolderingly sexy Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: SVU and who will soon be seen in Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel, has been cast as a vampire. Scratch that, as THE vampire, at least as far as the good people (and demons) of Bon Temps, Louisiana are concerned. Be still my heart.

Here’s the little tidbit I saw last week that made me sit up and take notice:

Now check the season five trailer that HBO has just dropped. It’s  full of all sorts of bloody mayhem. And Meloni in a well-cut suit.

True Blood returns to HBO on Sunday June 10 at 9pm (in the spot vacated by Game of Thrones)

First Prometheus Clip and New Images!

In today’s Prometheus news, we have a clip featuring the ship Prometheus landing on LV223, otherwise known as Zeta2 Reticuli; nothing too exciting except for the fact that it’s a clip from Prometheus, hopefully the first of many.

“Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. Sir Ridley Scott is Just Trying to Scare the Sh*t Out of You!

New Prometheus TV Spot: It's the Summer of Tough as Nails Charlize Theron

In today’s Prometheus news (you knew we’d have some, didn’t you?) we have an extended version of the “Origins” featurette. Big deal you say? Well, actually it is. Watch this if you want a few more answers to your burning questions about the plot as well as Sir Ridley’s theories of the origins of man. I’m not sure why we got the abbreviated version, but the Kiwis got the good one. This version has a lot more new footage and even the soundbites with the cast are extenuated.

As a special treat, I have to share this blog from the San Diego Reader and the blogger’s thoughts on the psycho-sexual nature of the Alien franchise.

Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Kate Dickie and Patrick Wilson opens 1st June in the UK and June 8 in the US. More soon!

Michael Fassbender Likes to Go Fast! But We Knew That

Michael Fassbender Puts It In Top Gear!

Months ago we brought you the news that Michael Fassbender was going to appear on the BBC’s wildly popular and long running car-talk show, "Top Gear" The show aired on the Beeb way back in February, but it finally premieres for us colonists on BBCAmerica tomorrow, Monday May 14. So as promised, I’m re-running the post, with a few tweaks.

You and I will finally be able to see The Stig give Fassy a driving lesson and then let him loose on the Lotus-designed Top Gear test track in their infamous “Reasonably Priced Car”, which is now the Kia Ceed. (Although I can more easily picture him in the Bentley Conti or the Porsche Panamera.)  At the time of taping, Rowan Atkinson had the time to beat  at 1.42.2.  (Tom Cruise was only two seconds off the lead in fourth place with 1.44.2.)

In the meantime, head over to the Top Gear page on the BBC site and reacquaint (or acquaint as the case may be) yourselves with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Oh and of course, The Stig.  These guys are hilarious.

The show will air on BBCAmerica at 8:30pm ET and repeat at 11pm ET. Check your local listings.

Here’s a bit of “Extra” footage of Fassy as the SIARPC (Star in a Reasonably Priced Car):
