The Following Has Attracted James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon to Fox!

Back in February we alerted you to the possibility that James Purefoy and Kevin Bacon might actually find their way to your television sets this year and apparently it is happening. Fox has picked up Kevin Williamson’s series, The Following, which centers on a diabolical serial killer (Purefoy) who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and the ex-FBI agent (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it. They’ve got an order for a season consisting of fifteen episodes and it has been added to the Fox mid-season line-up. (It will take over House's vacated Monday slot that will be filled in the Fall by Mob Doctor.)
Here is a nearly four minute trailer for the show that will also star Natalie Zea (Justified –wait does that mean no Wynona Hawkins next season??), Maggie Grace (Taken, Lockout) and Shawn Ashmore (Frozen). Judging from what I see here, I detect a strong Silence of the Lambs vibe, with Purefoy’s Joe Carroll standing in for Hannibal Lector and Bacon’s Ryan Hardy an older but wiser Clarice Starling. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I wonder why, given the films they do transmute to television, why it’s taken so long to produce a form of the Thomas Harris book or Jonathan Demme film. (Williamson is the creator and sole credited writer at this point and it’s not actually a version of Silence of the Lambs, but it does have some distinct similiarities. Check the trailer and see if you agree.)
Again, I’m not dissing The Following when I make that comparison. I’m in. I’m a Purefoy fan and I can’t wait to see how this plays out in primetime and on a regular broadcast channel.
