Matthew McConaughey is In Charge in First Clip from The Paperboy

Matthew McConaughey is In Charge in First Clip from The Paperboy

There are a lot of films set to bow at the Cannes Film Festival in the next couple of weeks that I am truly looking forward to. One is certainly Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy. Based Pete Dexter’s acclaimed novel, it’s got an eclectic cast that is capable of great things. The question remains whether or not Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman have brought their A games.  Both McConaughey and Kidman have turned in great performances of late (enough so that Kidman gets a pass for Trespass and I can’t wait to see Matty in Killer Joe and Mud – more on that one later) shedding their “movie star” personas and Cusack is always good,  enough to make you wish he got better material to work with (ie: The Raven).

We’ve got your first clip from The Paperboy (thanks to our friends at indieWire) and I think it reaffirms what I just said. The scene is a prison visitors’ room and the clip shows us Matthew McConaughey as Ward James, a journalist out to clear John Cusack’s Hilary van Wetter of the crime for which he’s sitting on death row.  Both actors appear to be in top form.

The clip is brief but since it’s marked #4, I hope that means we’ll be getting more of them in the coming weeks. I’m anxious to hear what those who will see it in Cannes have to say about it.

An idealistic reporter for the Miami Times returns to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving the murder of a local sheriff. He’s eventually helped by his younger brother, Jack (Zac Efron) as they investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a death row inmate (John Cusack). Matthew McConaughey plays Ward James, who teams with another reporter ( David Oyelowo as Yardley). During the course of the investigation, Jack falls for the woman (Kidman) whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.

The Paperboy doesn’t have domestic or UK release dates yet. I’m betting that will change after Cannes. You can see more of the pics we have for The Paperboy here.

Lovely New Brave Promo Just in Time for Mother’s Day!

Lovely New Brave Promo Just in Time for Mother's Day!

There's another new tv spot out for Disney/Pixar's Brave, just in time for Mother's Day here in the US. The mother/daughter relationship is one of the central themes of the film so it's only fitting that they choose to highlight it for the holiday. The spot gives us a lot of new footage including Merida as a wee lass, indulged by her father and fussed over by her mother. Watch it all the way through and you'll probably suspect, as I do, that Merida and her mother Queen Elinor have more in common than not. It's definitely clear that their bond is strong and there's a lot of love.

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. From Disney and Pixar, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition and challenges destiny to change her fate.

“Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources – including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers – to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor that audiences of all ages around the world have come to eagerly expect. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Brave, featuring the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane opens in the US on June 22 and in the UK on August 29. Check out the new image from the promo spot above as well.

Snow White vs The Queen – Final Battle – Fight!

Snow White vs The Queen - Final Battle - Fight!

In a truly silly junket appearance on MTV, the cast of Snow White and the Huntsman played a rapid-fire Q & A game called “The Yes/No Show” where the participants could only answer, you guessed it, yes or no to whatever question was posed to them. Among the vital tidbits of information gleaned, we learned that Chris Hemsworth has consumed an apple martini, Charlize Theron has skinny-dipped and Kristen Stewart owns no porn. Watch:

Sir Ridley Scott Takes Us Behind the Scenes to Find the Origins of Prometheus

Spazzy Geekgasm Redux! More New Images from Prometheus!

In today’s Prometheus news, we have a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette titled “Origins” and that pretty well sums up the contents. The clip features Sir Ridley discussing his film and how the search for the origins of our species fits in with what we actually know. We also hear from Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and screenwriter Damon Lindelof. There is a smattering of new footage here as well.

“Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”

Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green,  Idris Elba, and Patrick Wilson. Scott’s epic sci-fi thriller will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 1st June in the UK where it’s already broken IMAX pre-sales records, before heading to the US a week later on  June 8.

New TV Spot for The Amazing Spider-Man Teases Sneak Preview!

New TV Spot for The Amazing Spider-Man Teases Sneak Preview!

Here’s a slick new, actually the first, tv spot for The Amazing Spider-Man (and yes, it does contain a wee bit of new footage) that also serves as a teaser for a preview. The clip promises a four minute sneak peek at the film premiering Monday May 14 and found within the season premiere of “America’s Got Talent” on NBC.

“The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.”

The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on July 3. The film also stars Denis Leary, Campbell Scott and Irrfan Khan. Check out the two new stills of Garfield above and Stone below.

Daniel Craig and Naomie Harris Continue to Film Skyfall in Istanbul

Daniel Craig and Naomie Harris Continue to Film Skyfall in Istanbul

We have some pretty cool stuff on the Skyfall front. Not only do we have some new stills of Daniel Craig as James Bond in the streets of Istanbul, we also have some b-roll footage that features Naomie Harris shooting the scene from which we’ve already seen a still image in which she’s chasing one of the villains of the piece, Patrice, played by Ola Rapace. We also see Craig going over his blocking.

Doesn't it seem like they've been filming that marketplace scene for a long time? Think about the poor under-paid flack in charge of continuity having to place all of those oranges 'just so' day after day…

In this, his 23rd screen outing, Bond's loyalty to M (Dame Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Sam Mendes Skyfall opens in the UK on 26th October and November 9 here in the US. It stars, along with Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Berenice Marlohe and Ola Rapace.

Ruff McLauren Asks “Are You BRAVE Enough to Wear One?”

Ruff McLauren Asks "Are You BRAVE Enough to Wear One?"

Best. Ad. Ever. One of the geniuses at Disney/Pixar (the one on vacation during the week they were plotting the campaign for John Carter, apparently) has come up with a “mock” advertisement for a new line of kilts called, Kilt by Ruff McLauren.  The new “product’s” pitch-line is “Are You Brave Enough to Wear One?”. The ad of course features all of the manliest characters from the movie Brave, doing feats of daring (to the exasperation of our heroine Merida, of course.) I love it! (Thank you MovieFanatic)

Brave, as you all know by now, is the story of a young Scottish princess who wishes to change her destiny. Brave features the vocal talents of Kelly Macdonald as our heroine Merida, Emma Thompson as Queen Elinor, Billy Connolly as King Fergus and Kevin McKidd, Robbie Coltrane and Craig Ferguson as the three Scottish Lairds, MacGuffin, Dingwall and Macintosh, respectively. (McKidd also voices young MacGuffin as well.)

Brave will be the closing film of the Edinburgh Int’l Film Festival on 30th June, but doesn’t open for general release in the UK until 17th August. Good news though, we here in the US and Canada get to see it on June 22! That’s a new image above and below we have a Russian poster for the film. Enjoy

New Look at Michael Fassbender’s David and TV Spot for Prometheus

New Look at Michael Fassbender's David and TV Spot for Prometheus

We have another TV spot for Sir Ridley Scott's Prometheus. It’s  more of the same insanely awesome sci-fi that we’ve been seeing the past few months, for the most part. There is, however, a few snippets of new footage so watch closely. Word came down yesterday that the film will indeed carry an R-rating from the MPAA. I think of this as good news. It means that Sir Ridley didn’t pull any punches or compromise on his hard-core vision.  We also have a new image featuring Michael Fassbender as the android David.

Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With 'Prometheus', he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Once again, Prometheus opens 1st June in the UK and on June 8th  in the US. It stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green,  Idris Elba, Sean Harris, and Guy Pearce.
