First Official Images from The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio!

First Official Images from The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio!

Warner Brothers has released the first two official images from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, which continues to film in his native Australia, in 3D no less.  I will definitely need to be convinced of the value of filming F. Scott Fitzgerald in 3D, but I digress.

These are the first official images, since we’ve been getting periodic reports and pics from the set for the past couple of months. The first one shows us Tobey Maguire as Nick Carroway, Cary Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and Joel Edgerton’s Tom Buchanan in the background at what appears to be a New Year’s Even soiree.  The second pic is a moment between the lovers Gatsby and Daisy. Of course we don’t know the context, but it looks tender.

The Great Gatsby, with an adaptation by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, who have collaborated previously on Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet and Strictly Ballroom, also stars Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson, Jason Clarke as George Wilson and Gemma Ward as Myrtle’s sister, Catherine.  The film opens December 25, 2012 in the US.

First Look: Carey Mulligan is Daisy Buchanan!

First Look: Carey Mulligan is Daisy Buchanan!

Here’s the first official look at Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, currently shooting in Sydney Australia.  The pics below also give us new looks at Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carroway as they shoot scenes in Sydney’s Centennial Park. She looks like the quintessential flapper. Perfect Daisy!

Director Baz Luhrmann, with whom DiCaprio made Romeo + Juliet back in 1996 (although my favorite will always be Strictly Ballroom), is shooting the film in 3D which made absolutely no sense to me (yes yes I know you know how I feel about 3D), until DiCaprio gave this explanation to Access Hollywood, “ {the 3D is} being used for drama,” Leo told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, while promoting his latest movie, J. Edgar, in Los Angeles over the weekend.

“Most of the time, you associate 3-D with the spectacle of it, but he really wants to use 3-D to create emotional impact with the characters and almost use it like what it would be like to immerse yourself in a theater production,” Leo explained. “So I’m having a good time with that. Plus, it’s the great American novel.”

Well, I can understand what he means by an immersive theater experience. If Luhrmann’s able to pull this off, I may rethink my stance on this issue. I certainly hope it will enhance the material and not detract from it.

The Great Gatsby costars Joel Edgerton as Daisy’s husband Tom Buchanan,  Isla Fisher as his lover Myrtle Wilson and Jason Clarke as her husband George. The film opens in the US on December 25, 2012 but will probably have its premiere in Australia before that. Enjoy the pics!

The Men of AFI! – photos

The Men of AFI! - photos

Doesn’t that sound salacious? Like it belongs on a calendar full of cheesecake photos? Well, that’s not quite what we have here. The American Film Institute has been holding its annual AFI Festival and so there have been quite a few red carpets spread out upon which some very nice gentleman have stepped in the past few nights.

Leonardo Di Caprio, Armie Hammer (doesn’t he just look like he’d make the perfect Prince Charming? His movie now has a title, by the way. Tarsem Singh’s unnamed Snow White Project is now called Mirror, Mirror) as well as director Clint Eastwood all showed up for the premiere of J. Edgar.

Antonio Banderas appeared at the tribute to his friend and frequent director Pedro Almodovar. Not crazy about the haircut, but those eyes still get me.

Jeremy Piven, Thomas Jane and Rob Lowe (who must have a slowly degrading portrait locked in his attic) turned up for a screening of I Melt With You. And Dominic Cooper represented the Y chromosomes for My Week with Marilyn.

Saving the best for last, we have Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor who brought the sexy to the stage and sat for a Q & A with director Steven Soderbergh and costar Gina Carrano after the “sneak” screening of Haywire. And then Ralph Fiennes (sadly sans Gerard Butler) showed them both what they have to look forward to in a few years, at the AFI screening of his directorial debut, Coriolanus. (Call me crazy but I love that he was having a bad hair day. Those eyes!)

Enjoy the pics!

First Look at Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby!

First Look at Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby!

This is what I’ve been waiting for! Finally, we get a look at Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby! He’s down in Sydney Australia on the set of Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, The Great Gatsby.

We also have a look at Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson and Jason Clarke as her husband George. Last week we saw first pics of Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan. They appear in these as well. Now we just need pics of Carey Mulligan as Daisy!

The film’s synopsis: Naive midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

I’m looking  forward to this because I think Luhrmann will do more justice to the material than did Jack Clayton’s 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Sure the production values were sumptuous but there was no ‘there’ there. Ya know?  The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan will open December 25, 2012.

New Stills for Eastwood’s J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio!

New Stills for Eastwood's J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio!

There are a lot of new pics available for Clint Eastwood’s new baby, J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the original head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. J. Edgar Hoover was the symbol of American law enforcement for nearly 50 years and assembled a cohesive, cooperative federal enforcement agency that advanced the use of forensic evidence, especially fingerprints. He was also hated as much as he was admired. His  now legendary abuses of power include the manipulation and blackmail of elected officials, wiretapping and the intimidation of civil rights leaders.  But, "…behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life." J. Edgar tells the story of this dichotomy.

Also in the cast are Dame Judi Dench as Hoover's mother Anne Marie, Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, Hoover's friend, ally, constant companion and perhaps lover (the movie is leaving it open to interpretation), Josh Lucas as Charles Lindbergh, Naomie Watts as Helen Gandy (seen in the pics at various stages of her fifty-four years as Hoover's trusted secretary) and  Jeffrey "Burn Notice" Donovan as Robert F. Kennedy. (And is it me or does it look like Hoover is arresting Conan O'Brien in one of the pics? It's actually Damon Herriman as Dewey Crowe… Bruno Hauptmann)

Written by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, "Big Love"), J. Edgar will open in the US and Canada on November 11.

J. Edgar DiCaprio Gets Two New Posters!

J. Edgar DiCaprio Gets Two New Posters!

Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten two new posters, both variations on a theme. I like them both. The red, white and blue version, while seemingly more patriotic, also seems more menacing. But then again, I remember seeing pictures of the man. Eastwood's film explores the public and private life of "one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century. As the face of law enforcement in America for almost fifty years, Hoover was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life". (Although word is that Eastwood has soft-pedaled what those secrets actually are.)

J. Edgar costars Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas, Ken Howard , Ed Westwick, Lea Thompson, Stephen Root, Jeffrey Donovan and Dermot Mulroney. It's been selected to open the American Film Institute Fest on November 3, ahead of its November 9 US opening. It will open on 20 January in the UK.
